Junji Ito’s most popular manga series, Uzumaki, finally got the anime adaptation it deserves! After fans were left anticipating its release date, the first episode immediately made them realize why it was worth the wait, or so they thought!

Uzumaki by Junji Ito is considered one of the best manga series in the horror genre. As expected, fans would anticipate an anime adaptation of this show for a long time. Surviving multiple delays following the announcement of a faithful adaptation, Uzumaki witnessed several trials and tribulations.
The first episode aired on September 28, 2024, and was considered a masterpiece. Fans believed that the ‘curse’ of Junji Ito’s works had been lifted. However, after the second episode was released on October 5, fans of the show noticed several downgrades. From poor lip syncing to inconsistent animation, this installment hit every cylinder to be the worst showing in recent history.
Fans all over social media have expressed their disappointment over the demotion in quality.
Uzumaki’s EP Breaks Silence on the Drop in Animation Quality
Jason DeMarco, the executive producer of Uzumaki, finally broke his silence regarding the controversy. It seems like the co-creator of Toonami Action Block knows the reason why the quality had suffered a downgrade.
DeMarco went on a tirade on X(formerly Twitter), talking about his experience with Uzumaki. The executive producer of the show believes he and his team were deceived. Two different studios getting together to perfect this cult classic made the adaptation all the more chaotic in terms of quality and public perception.
“I can’t talk about what went down but we were screwed over,” wrote Jason DeMarco.

The clear difference between the first and second episode were blamed on the different production teams. Fans pointed out that the director for the respective episodes were also different. Although the particular reason for the shift in quality is unclear, there are aspects of the team changes that are considered noteworthy.
