Who Are the Strongest Kaiju in the Kaiju No. 8 Series?

Naoya Matsumoto’s Kaiju No. 8 has garnered millions of fans worldwide with its Godzilla-themed Shonen plot. Throughout the series, there have been multiple monsters, popularly known as Kaiju, who have rampaged around Japan while the Japan Anti-Kaiju Defense Force has tried to neutralize them.

The strongest Kaiju are called the Daikaiju, and they are named after numbers. Due to their immense strength, a few of them have been turned into weapons after they were killed. Here is a list of all the strongest Kaiju who appeared in Naoya Matsumoto’s magnum opus.

1. Kaiju No. 9

• Fortitude Level: 9.5+

Kaiju No. 9 is the main antagonist of the series. While it seemed to have surfaced pretty recently, it is carrying the Meireki Era monster within itself. The antagonist is not only powerful but, unlike other Kaiju, it is intelligent and can analyze a situation before taking the next step. It can revive other Kaiju and absorb them, whichever option seems more advantageous.

Kaiju No. 9 has gradually evolved over the series by absorbing other Kaiju, but its most notorious deed was when it absorbed Kaiju No. 2’s Numbered Weapon along with Isao Shinomiya. Without a doubt, it is the strongest Daikaiju humanity has ever faced, with destruction fortitude quite easily exceeding 9.5.

2. Kaiju No. 8 (Kafka Hibino)

• Fortitude Level: 9.5+

Kaiju No. 8, or Kafka Hibino, is the main protagonist of the series. Kaiju No. 8 is the embodiment of the rage and regret of all the warriors who died while fighting the Meireki Era monster. Due to their hatred for the monster, they have been looking for a host, which they found in Kafka.

Kaiju No. 8’s destruction fortitude also crosses 9.5 and is seen to defeat powerful Kaiju in a single blow. Even though it is small compared to other Daikaiju, Kaiju No. 8 was able to overpower Kaiju No. 9 in multiple scenarios and subdue Isao Shinomya while he was wearing Kaiju No. 2’s Numbers Weapon.

3. Kaiju No. 6

• Fortitude Level: 9.6

Before the main protagonist and antagonist, Kaiju No. 6 was hailed to be the strongest Daikaiju in Kaiju No. 8. The monster was known as the “King of the Kaiju.” During its rampage, Kaiju No. 6 managed to kill 200 defense force members and 3 captains, including Hikari Shinomiya, the captain of the Second Division and the wife of Isao Shinomiya.

The monster possesses the ability of Cryokinesis, which grants him ice-related powers. It was able to cause such destruction by bringing giant snowstorms on the battlefield. On the destruction fortitude scale, its numbers were a staggering 9.6.

4. Kaiju No. 2

• Fortitude Level: 9.0+

Kaiju No. 2 is the second monster to receive a numbers ID and was regarded as the “Daikaiju of Destruction.” It appeared in 1972 and almost destroyed Sapporo before being neutralized by the Defence Force. One of his specialties was Sonic Attacks, which were powerful enough to lay down cities. Other than that, Kaiju No. 2 could use Energy Blasts from his mouth, causing massive destruction in mere seconds. Even after being turned into a Numbers Weapon, no one apart from Isao Shinomiya could control it, such was its ferocity.

5. Kaiju No. 1

• Fortitude Level: 9.0+

Kaiju No. 1 is the first number Kaiju in Kaiju No. 8. The most unique feature of this monster is that there are multiple cracks in its body, filled with pink eyes. These eyes are his specialty as they grant him the ability of pseudo-foresight. Using this ability, the Kaiju can see other people’s attacks and pinpoint their weak spots to counter them.

Like most Kaiju, it was subdued by the Anti-Kaiju Defence Force, but exact details of its subjugation are unavailable. After its subjugation, it was turned into a Numbers Weapon, currently being used by First Division Commander Gen Narumi and Kikoru Shinomiya.

6. Kaiju No. 10

• Fortitude Level: 9.0

Kaiju No. 10 is a specialist in close combat and has the unique ability to control other Kaiju using sonar signals. It is an intimidating-looking monster that is always looking for potent individuals to fight. Initially, the monster was created by Kaiju No. 9 and had a destruction fortitude of 8.3. However, after growing in size, the number increased to 9, and even after losing, his head constantly maintained a fortitude level of 5.7. Later, Kaiju No. 10 was converted into a Numbers Weapon for Third Division Vice Captain Soshiro Hoshina.

7. Kaiju No. 4

• Fortitude Level: 9.0

Apart from being one of the most powerful Kaiju in the series, Kaiju No. 4 could fly. It has wings on either side that allow it to travel at great speed. Unlike other Kaiju, Kaiju No. 4 had a flat face with sharp teeth covering its mouth. Its body resembled a centipede and had three eyes.

After the Anti-Kaiju Defence Force defeated the monster, it was turned into a Numbers Weapon that was used by Hikari Shinomiya. Currently, it is used by her daughter, Kikoru Shinomiya. Even though it is a Numbers Weapon, Kaiju No. 4 seems to have a vivid memory of Hikari since her ghost was visible to Kikoru. Also, it is quite judgmental towards its new user and pretty observant.

Honorable Mentions

Apart from Kaiju No. 10, Kaiju No. 9 also created other Kaiju, who had fortitude levels over 9, earning them a Number ID each. It created five of them, namely Kaiju No. 11-15. They appeared during the Second Wave arc, each designed to counter a specific member of the Japan Anti-Kaiju Defence Force. However, they were defeated by the Defence Force.
