Dragon Ball DAIMA is one of the top-rated anime series from 2024. While the story was good, with Son Goku and Vegeta exploring a new realm, it was late Akira Toriyamaโ€™s nostalgia that attracted anime fans globally. The anime series was the last work of the legendary mangaka before passing away.

Because of how popular it was, Dragon Ball DAIMA earned two nominations at the 2025 Astra Awards โ€“ Best Anime Series and Best Lead Voice-Over Performance. The results of the 2025 Astra Awards were revealed on June 10, 2025, and it everyoneโ€™s surprise, Dragon Ball DAIMA won the Best Anime Series, leaving the likes of Dan Da Dan, Solo Leveling Season 2, Lazarus, Fire Force Season 3, and The Apothecary Diaries Season 2 behind. Many thought Solo Leveling or Dan Da Dan would win, especially since the former won the award last year, with Blue Eye Samurai, Frieren: Beyond Journeyโ€™s End, Ninja Kamui, Pluto, and Scott Pilgrim Takes Off being the other nominees.

Other Awards For The Anime Community At 2025 Astra Awards

There were only two awards categories dedicated to the anime community – Best Anime Series and Best Lead Voice-Over Performance. While Dragon Ball DAIMA won the first won, the latter was won by Aleks Le for Solo Leveling. Other nominees include Kaley Cuoco for Harley Quinn, Alex Borstein for Family Guy: Holiday Special, Seth McFarlane for Family Guy: Holiday Special, Johnny Yong Bosch for Devil May Cry, and Stephanie Nadolny for Dragon Ball DAIMA.

While Best Supporting Voice-Over Performance had several nominations from the anime industry, like Caitlin Glass for One Piece Season 21, Justin Briner for Solo Leveling Season 2, and Xolo Mariduena for Sakamoto Days, it was Jack Quaid who won the award for Star Trek: Lower Decks, which is an animated series.

What Made Dragon Ball DAIMA So Special?

Without a doubt, the late Akira Toriyamaโ€™s involvement with the anime series is one of the many reasons that made it so special. He was deeply involved with the project, wrote key plot elements, and brought back the original character designs. Unlike other series of the franchise, Dragon Ball DAIMA has kept the episodes limited, maintaining a higher quality of content. Everyone appreciated how the franchise brought out the adventurous theme of the anime rather than just focusing on power scaling.

The animation and visuals added a modern touch to the decades-old character, creating a perfect blend of old and new. Dragon Ball DAIMA brought back the comic reliefs that used to be a part of the original Dragon Ball, and the fans also got to see the kidsโ€™ version of their favorite characters. Lastly, the late Akira Toriyamaโ€™s last work featured character-driven storytelling, which has been missing for quite some time.
