Kaiju No. 8 First Division’s Strongest Soldiers ft Gen Narumi

Naoya Matsumoto’s Kaiju No. 8 has sixteen Divisions in the Japan Anti-Kaiju Defence Force. These Divisions are divided into North, South, East, and West zones, with each zone containing four teams. Out of all of them, the First Division is regarded as the strongest. They belong to the Eastern Zone along with Second, Third, and Fourth Divisions, and the Ariake Maritime Base acts as their base of operations. The First Division has had several strong soldiers in the past as well as the present.

Here is a list of all those who are or were associated with the First Division of the Japan Anti-Kaiju Defence Force.

Present Members

1. Gen Narumi

• Position: Captain

Gen Narumi succeeded Isao Shinomiya as the Seventh Captain of the First Division of the Japan Anti-Kaiju Defence Force. He possesses unparalleled battle prowess and wields the Number Weapons 1. The Numbers Weapon 1 does not come with any special attacks, but helps him see through the attacks of the opponents and locate their weak spots.

While other captains or officers spend their time training, Gen spends his time playing video games. He is so addicted to it that he goes without sleep for hours. Gen Narumi was personally trained by Isao Shinomiya, who gave his everything while teaching him. As a result, he is known as the strongest combatant in the Defence Force. He uses a bayonet to slash, stab, or shoot simultaneously towards his enemies.

2. Eiji Hasegawa

• Position: Vice Captain

Eiji Hasegawa is a rational and composed man who has to deal with Gen Narumi. Even though Gen is senior to him, Eiji has to take care of him by asking him to stop playing video games or take away the numerous packages the former orders. It has often led him to have quarrels with his captain. Eiji Hasegawa is a strong soldier and has showcased his leadership skills during battles. His professionalism has earned him the respect of other divisions as well. He has a unique battle armour with machine guns on his soldier.

3. Rin Shinonome

• Position: Platoon Leader

Rin Shinonome is one of the Platoon Leaders of the First Division. She is a short woman with a serious personality, but enjoys her time while doing things correctly. Rin is full of admiration for her captain and follows his orders without any question. She is a great sharpshooter and an expert in combat. Rin is so fond of Gen Narumi that she always aspires to be stronger and more beautiful to gain the latter’s attention. She overcame with joy when Gen made her a Platoon Leader.

She has a rivalry with Tae Nakanoshima, one of the Platoon Leaders of the Third Division. While Rin seems to be head over heels for her captain, she is quite protective of her squad, which often leads to her putting her life on the line to fulfill her duties.

4. Tachibana

Position: Platoon Leader

Like Rin Shinonome, Tachibana is also a Platoon Leader of the First Division. Tachibana is one of the most recognizable characters in Kaiju No. 8 due to the long horizontal scar on his forehead. Following his captain and fellow Platoon Leader, Tachibana has also made a rival belonging to the Third Division. His signature weapon is a shotgun, and he wears the regular battle armour of the Defence Force. Tachibana is pretty strong and can hold his ground against a Kaiju. Due to his battle prowess, Gen Narumi also said that he has the potential to become a captain in the future.

5. Akira Kurusu

• Position: Operations Leader

Akira Kurusu is one of the most crucial members of the First Division. He acts as their brain by analysing Kaiju and what kind of threat do they bring. Being the Operations Leader of the First Division, he was loyal to Isao Shinomiya and acted as his personal aide during battles. He was so loyal to him that he was not ready to leave the facility when Isao was fighting Kaiju No. 9 and kept on aiding him.

Past Members

1. Isao Shinomiya

• Position: Captain

Isao Shinomiya was the former captain of the First Division of the Japan Anti-Kaiju Defence Force. He was hailed as the strongest soldier in the defence force and was the only one who was able to wield the Numbers Weapon 2. He was the one who trained Gen Narumi and put his faith in Kafka Hibino while others were afraid of him. The former captain of the First Division was so strong that the current captain, Gen Narumi, was never able to beat him.

Isao is the husband of Hikaru Shinomiya and the father of Kikoru Shinomiya. He was promoted to become the Director General of the Defence Force because of his intellect and experience. Unfortunately, Isao Shinomiya was absorbed by Kaiju No. 9 while the latter was hunting the Numbers Weapons.

2. Hikaru Shinomiya

• Position: Vice Captain

Hikaru Shinomiya was one of the gifted soldiers the Defence Force has ever seen. After joining them, she soon climbed to the rank of the Vice Captain of the First Division, and later became the Captain of the Second Division. Hikaru wielded the Numbers Weapon 4, which made her the fastest soldier. Apart from the Numbers Weapon, Hikaru had a large spear and wore a respiratory mask. Like her husband, she was a born leader and great combatant. However, during the subjugation of Kaiju No. 6, she was slain, along with hundreds of others.

3. Keiji Itami

• Position: Member

Keiji Itami is an elderly man and one of the higher officials of the Japan Anti-Kaiju Defence Force. He was formerly a member of the First Division and was the one who suggested Gen Narumi’s name to Isao Shinomiya while he was still the division’s captain. Due to Keiji’s intellect and rationality, Isao trusted him a lot and advised him to become the Deputy Director General to help him where he lacked. Even though Keiji hated higher positions, he accepted the role out of sheer respect for his colleague. After the former Director General died in battle, Keiji Itami took his position. Unfortunately, not much is known about his battle prowess or what weapons he wielded.

Future Members

1. Kikoru Shinomiya

• Position: Officers

Kikoru Shinomiya joining the First Division under Captain Gen Narumi completed her family’s legacy of being a part of the First Division. Initially, she was appointed as an officer of the Third Division under Mina Ashiro, but after Kafka Hibino revealed his Kaiju transformation, several members of that division were sent to other squads, with Kikoru being one of them. Kikoru became a great soldier with more time on the battlefield and training. She became the only soldier to wield to Numbers Weapons at once. Gen Narumi entrusted her with his Numbers Weapon 1, and she also had Numbers Weapon 4, which belonged to her mother.

2. Kafka Hibino

• Position: Officer

After Kafka Hibino revealed himself to be Kaiju No. 8, he was sent to the First Division and was kept under the watch of Gen Narumi. He trained to gain control over his Kaiju form and was regarded as humanity’s trump card against the monsters. While Kafka never managed to defeat any training fights, he was gaining experience and building his physicality. He learned a lot while he was in the First Division. Even though he started his journey as a member of the Third Division, Kafka defeated the Meireki Era monsters as an officer of the First Division.
