It has been a few months since Cuttlefish That Loves Diving’s Lord of Mysteries anime was announced. The donghua gained massive responses from the fans upon its release. One of the intriguing things about the donghua was its sci-fi, supernatural, and neo-noir plot. On June 28, 2025, the Lord of Mysteries anime finally aired, putting an end to the long wait of the fans. Surprisingly, the joy was doubled since two episodes were released in a single day, making the weekends enjoyable for everyone. Here is a review of Lord of Mysteries Episodes 1 & 2 and why it should be on everyone’s watchlist for the 2025 Summer.
What Happened In Lord of Mysteries Episode 1 & 2?
Lord of Mysteries episode 1 begins with the protagonist fighting a supernatural being with several tentacles. After that, his head was slowly filled with worm-like creatures, and he was transmigrated into a new world and into a new body. The body belonged to Khoy University’s history graduate, Klein Moretti. He discovers that the character had previously committed suicide with a gun and a bloodied notebook on his table, with the writings that everyone, including him, will die.
Klein went to the market on his sister Melissa’s demand and met a fortune teller. He chose a tarot card, and upon returning home, he performed the ritual mentioned to him. The ritual required him to buy eight loaves of bread and arrange them in the four corners of his room. He walks in the shape of a square and recites a chant with the motive of this world. To his surprise, he found himself in a different dimension, along with two strangers, Audrey Hall and Alger Wilson.
They discussed about Pathways (named formulas for potion that grant the drinker the ability to become a Beyonder, and there exists 22 Pathways), Beyonders (sentient beings with supernatural abilities that allow an individual to become more prominent within a Pathway), and Sequences (the hierarchical levels within a pathway that helps in determining a Beyonder’s progress towards divinity). After returning to the present world, Klein is approached by a few detectives. One of those detectives happens to be Dunn Smith, who persuaded him to join the Nighthawks. As a member of the authority, Klein officially landed his first mission and solved it after much difficulty. It marked the start of Klein’s journey as a Beyonder in Lord of Mysteries.
Lord of Mysteries Delivers On Its Debut
There are always some expectations surrounding popular anime adaptations, and Lord of Mysteries happened to be one of them. However, it is fair to say that Cuttlefish That Loves Diving’s magnum opus has delivered where it mattered. The anime has beautifully adapted most of the details of the donghua, like the transmigration of Zhou Migrui when he finds himself in Klein Moretti’s body after the latter’s supposed suicide attempt. As the story progresses, things get more tangled, leading to the mystery getting denser.
The animation is seamless and showcases the greatness of B.CMay Pictures. It oozes visual brilliance with every frame. The Lord of Mysteries takes place in the Victorian era, and likewise, the animation studio perfected the background to provide an authentic vibe to it. While the overall visuals are great, the suspense-laden visuals are definitely one of the striking features of the anime. The cinematography and art direction work hand in hand to create strong neo-noir vibes from the start. The Loen Kingdom was upheld gracefully and brought back the Victorian era. Bordered by the beautiful Midseashire Lake, Feysac Empire, Sonia Sea, Berserk Sea, Intis Republic, and Lenburg, the kingdom is located on the Northern Continent’s Eastern Part.
Lastly, the showrunners outdid themselves with the world-building, focusing on the setup and conspiracies from the very beginning. Most of the time, the story’s pacing is tight and fast, with character arcs just flying by. However, they provide just enough time to include heartwarming moments like the introduction of Melissa, Klein Moretti’s sister. It keeps the balance between light and darkness. The mystery is the main part of the story, and anime has been faithful to it.
Lord of Mysteries Just Barely Missed The Perfect Score
Lord of Mysteries has been to a great start, but still, there are a couple of things that they could have done better. The anime’s plot is quite dense, and with such heavy lore, things might be misunderstood by the audience. Also, there are rarely any moments when it feels like the anime is taking a rest. It always maintains a fast pace, which could be a problem for many newcomers, as they might have difficulty understanding the plot in a single go. Overall, it had a great start and has the potential to become one of the best releases of the year.
