With the premiere of Hell’s Paradise Season 2 looming over our heads, it is only natural that fans would want to go over some of the things revealed in the first season. While the anime majorly focused on Gabimaru, other convicts, and the Asaemon, the events themselves took place on the mysterious island called Kotaku.

Kotaku, also known as the Shinsenkyo, is a mystical island located beyond the Ryukyu Kingdom in the southwest seas. Although people know it for its captivating beauty, it’s mostly infamous for the “elixir of life,” an elixir presumably capable of granting immortality to one who consumes it.

What is Shinsenkyo in Hell’s Paradise: Jigokuraku?

The Shinsenkyo in Hell’s Paradise is a mystical island with a history of over a thousand years. Long ago, Emperor Qin Shi Huang sent one of his subjects, Jofuku, to Kotaku to retrieve the Elixir of Life. However, when Jofuku made landfall with his wife Rien, he ended his quest and started experimenting with the life energy called Tao.

It was during these experiments that Jofuku created the artificial lifeforms and the flora and fauna embedded with Tao.

Effectively, before Jofuku and Rien arrived on the island, the Shinsenkyo was a blank slate. It was simply a beautiful island with a pristine natural environment and lush green forests.

After their arrival, the island was filled with peculiar plants, monsters, and artificial beings, such as the Tensen. Not to mention, these abominations divided the island into three layers.

What are the three layers of the Shinsenkyo?

As shared by Hoko, the Shinsenkyo is divided into three layers. The outermost layer is called Eishuu, then comes Houjo, and the innermost region is called Hourai.

Eishuu

The outermost layer of the Shinsenkyo is home to Soushin. The Soushin are the lowest class of monsters on the island that guard it from outsiders. The Eishuu is described as either extremely beautiful or grotesque, depending on the person.

Houjo

The Houjo is the middle region that separates the Eishuu from the Hourai. The region was previously home to a thriving population of people who came to the island with Jofuku and Rien. Years later, the region is now home to only Hoko and Mei, who simply wish to live in peace.

Hourai

The Hourai is the innermost layer of the Shinsenkyo. This region once served as the base of operations for Jofuku. At present, it is home to the Tensen and is known to hide the legendary secret behind immortality.
