One Piece has begun the arc featuring Bartholomew Kuma’s past. To date, it remains one of the saddest backstories ever, with every scene making the fans hate the World Government even more. One of the crucial things that the backstory reveals is the race that the former Warlord belongs to. Bartholomew Kuma belongs to the Buccaneer race and is believed to be the last of them.

There are multiple races in One Piece, like Lunarians, Fishmen, Long-Legs, etc., and the Buccaneers happen to be one of them. The Buccaneers are one of the rarest races, like the Lunarians, and are considered to be a direct enemy of the World Government. How they came into existence remains unknown, but Kuma’s backstory significantly explores the race’s whereabouts.

Buccaneers – The Enemies Of The World Government

The Buccaneers race is one of the strongest races in One Piece, with great durability and strength. They can withstand physical torture and injuries of high degrees even when they are children. They are considered to be the enemies of the World Government due to committing a crime in the past. As a result, they are either killed or taken as slaves by the World Government upon discovery. However, the crime for which they are being punished has not been revealed yet.

The extinct race is considered to be a hybrid of multiple races, including humans and giant blood. Buccaneers are taller and larger than humans but much shorter than giants, and age normally like humans. It shows that the Buccaneer biology has blood from other species, too. The only way to differentiate a human from a Buccaneer is to conduct a blood test.

For generations, the Buccaneers have kept their faith in Sun God Nika. They believe that Nika will bring freedom and joy to Earth upon his arrival. Even when Kuma was taken as a slave, his father, Clapp, told him about Nika and asked him to keep his faith in the Sun God. Since then, Kuma has always been faithful to Sun God Nika.

Is Bartholomew Kuma Truly A Buccaneer?

After his father’s death, the former warlord, Bartholomew Kuma, is the last surviving member of the Buccaneer race, as confirmed by Saint Jaygarcia Saturn. Even though he has been converted into a cyborg, he technically still belongs to the race. Kuma is considered to be a pure Buccaneer even though his mother was a human. While many may think Jewelry Bonney to be a Buccaneer, she is not the biological daughter of Kuma. Kuma never committed any crime but had to endure one of the harshest journeys because he belonged to that race.
