The world of anime is filled with numerous villain groups, ranging from underworld syndicates to godly factions, which are more complex than petty organizations that engage in minor thefts. These groups possess strong ideologies, which can lead to large-scale destruction and political struggles. Each villain group is unique in its own way and has members that make the groups more vibrant and ferocious. While the villain group has its motive, each member also has their own. Here is a list featuring the best villain groups in anime that have caused massive destruction in their respective worlds.
1. Akatsuki
- Anime: Naruto/Naruto Shippuden
The Akatsuki is one of the strongest and ruthless villain groups in anime history. They are made up of a few selected S-rank shinobi who went rogue and have exceptional abilities, classifying them as a top-tier threat. Pain is the leader of the Akatsuki, possessing the Rinnegan.
The organization is known to hunt for Tailed Beasts and has killed multiple people during their quests. On top of that, they have staged political manipulation from being in the shadows, assassinations, kidnappings, and finally leading to the start of the Fourth Great Ninja World, which saw thousands of shinobi dying.
The Akatsuki is a great criminal organization because every member has a backstory. They follow a unique ideology, and luckily, the organization allows it as long as the mission is completed. When these things are taken into consideration, they appear to be more morally complex than evil.
2. Phantom Troupe
- Anime: Hunter x Hunter
The Phantom Troupe is a mysterious villain group operating in Hunter x Hunter. Unlike the Akatsuki, all the members of Phantom Troupe hailed from Meteor City. They are thieves who united under the leadership of Chrollo Lucilfer. The number of members increased when Hisoka Morrow joined them, and he happened to be one of the members who was not from Meteor City.
The Phantom Troupe is a feared and hated organization, and their evil deeds include the massacre of the Kurta Clan. They killed all the members of the Kurta Clan (except Kurapika) for their scarlet eyes, which have great monetary value. Other than that, they were also responsible for several heists, similar to the Yorknew City auction.
The members are numbered from 1-13, and have a sense of loyalty to each other because they hail from the same place. The members are brutal, yet charismatic, highlighting a family that is chaotic and twisted.
3. Port Mafia
- Anime: Bungou Stray Dogs
The Port Mafia is another standout criminal organization in the anime world. They work within Yokohama and are identified as an underworld syndicate with unrivaled power. The organization is led by Ougai Mori, who is, like other members in the anime, named after a real-life person.
The Port Mafia has done everything that a criminal organization does, like assassinations, get involved in black-market trades, be a part of power struggles, within and outside the organizations, and has manipulated the city’s politics to their advantage.
As an organization, the Port Mafia is exceptionally smooth operating, with people identifying them as businessmen rather than criminals. On the surface, they maintain a low profile, but beneath it, they reveal their legitimate business mask and become deadly individuals with utmost proficiency.
4. Paranormal Liberation Front
- Anime: My Hero Academia
The Paranormal Liberation Front is every law and order, and Pro-Heroes’ nightmare. They were formed when the Meta Liberation Army joined hands with the League of Villains. The criminal organization’s goal is to lift the restrictions on using Quirks, making sure that there is no law or order to stop people, even if they do something illegal.
The Paranormal Liberation Front is responsible for starting the Paranormal Liberation War, which has led to massive destruction throughout Japan. It was so deadly, the event saw the civilians siding with them, terrorists finding it the perfect time to attack, and usurping Hero organizations.
Paranormal Liberation Front picked up a sensitive issue and combined it with utter chaos, showcasing their genius. The war was staged in such a way that the villains had the political edge, making the Pro-Heroes look as if they were the wrong ones.
5. The Sternritter
- Anime: Bleach: Thousand Year Blood War
The Sternritter is an extremely powerful Quincy organization that acts as a direct rival to the Soul Society. Quincy’s father, Yhwach, is the leader of the organization and handpicked all the members. As a result, all the members of the Sternritters are elite warriors with unique Shrift (Holy letter-based abilities). Their motive is to combine all three worlds (human, hollow, and soul reaper), even if it means mass murder.
The Sternritter, under Yhwach’s leadership, invaded the Soul Society, wreaked havoc, and started an all-out war. They commenced the mass slaughter of the Soul Reapers and weakened the Gotei 13 by stealing their Bankai.
The Sternritter is an organized criminal organization, following their leader’s word diligently. They have a militaristic hierarchical system, highlighting their management. Due to them having unique Schrift, all of them have different abilities, making it difficult for their opponents to face them.
6. Twelve Kizuki
- Anime: Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba
The Twelve Kizuki are the twelve strongest demons in Demon Slayer. They are grouped equally as Upper Moons and Lower Moons. The Twelve Kizuki were extremely strong and bloodthirsty demons who enjoyed feeding on humans. Kibutsuji Muzan is the leader of the organization (all demons) and is the one who came up with the idea of creating twelve powerful demons who can work under him.
The Twelve Kizuki have been killing humans for centuries and, on a few occasions, turning them into demons. They have also murdered Demon Slayer Corps members, including Hashira, without remorse. Due to their regeneration abilities, they can easily outlast them.
Each of the Twelve Kizuki has a sad backstory showcasing their struggle as a human, and how they finally became a demon, with monstrous abilities. All of them are loyal to Muzan, but have little regard for each other, showcasing that they lost their compassion after becoming a demon.
7. God Hand
- Anime: Berserk
The God Hand is an extremely cruel organization with supernatural entities. Initially, there were four, but after Griffith’s Femto transformation, the number increased. The group is dedicated to causing human suffering through the architects of Eclipse and fate’s manipulation.
The God Hand is constantly spreading evil across the world, with Griffith sacrificing the Band of the Hawk to gain godly powers. Thanks to it, the Eclipse began, leading all the members to lose their lives, and Guts losing one of his hands, while Casca suffered sexual violence.
The God Hand has supernatural beings, who are the personification of corruption and evil. They have horrific philosophies, which will send shivers down the spines. Their being such omnipotent villains elevates Berserk and surrounds it with an eerie atmosphere.
8. Espada
- Anime: Bleach
The Espada are the ten strongest Arrancar of Hueco Mundo, who posed a direct threat to Gotei 13. Former Gotei 13 Captain, Sosuke Aizen, acts as their leader. Each member of the Espada represents a different aspect of death and is numbered from 1 to 10.
The Espada loves killing the Soul Reapers and causing destruction. They are engrossed with the mission of invading the human world and will stop at nothing. Even when it comes to Hueco Mundo, they maintain a reign of terror, with no care for other hollows.
The Espada are a visually vibrant group with unique designs and personalities. Every scene they appear, is not just a declaration of war, but a reminder of how magnificent they are. The Espada has different forms, which vary from member to member.
9. Ten Commandments
- Anime: Seven Deadly Sins
The Ten Commandments are elite warriors from the Demon Clan, chosen by the Demon King himself. Each member is cursed with a certain Commandment, making them powerful in their own way. Zeldris is the captain of the Ten Commandments and one of the sons of the Demon King.
The Ten Commandments’ mission is to resurrect the Demon King, and for that, they have massacred multiple races, including humans, giants, fairies, etc., throughout Britannia. They have spread curses throughout the country, showing how evil and omnipotent they are.
The Ten Commandments is one of the well-written criminal organizations. Since they are cursed with moral dilemmas, they are the worst opponents to face in battles. Due to their abilities, the protagonists have to deal with them physically and spiritually.
10. Aogiri Tree
- Anime: Tokyo Ghoul
The Aogiri Tree is a ghoul terrorist organization founded by the One-Eyed Ghoul, Eto Yoshimura. She, along with other ghouls, went against the humans to create a world free for the Ghouls. The organization aimed to end the Commission of Counter Ghoul’s reign.
The Aogiri Tree is responsible for mass murder since the ghouls feed on humans. They were behind several kidnappings and illegal experiments of half-ghouls. Due to them, there was a massive ghoul uprising, leading to a deadly war between the humans and ghouls.
While most people will find them as an evil organization, their motives make them more complex. The Aogiri Tree acts as freedom fighters, which, technically, is a righteous move from their perspective, erasing the fine line between villainy and struggle.
11. The Homunculi
- Anime: Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
The Homunculi are a group of criminals who enjoy causing destruction. They are artificially created and named after the seven deadly sins by the Father. Their personalities and abilities differ based on their personalities making them a unique organization.
The Homunculi orchestrated the Ishvalan genocide, manipulated wars, infiltrated Amestris, and, most importantly, the evil organization harvested human lives to connect the underground tunnel around Amestris through the Nationwide Transmutation Circle.
The Homunculi explores themes of sacrifice and humanity through philosophies. Their being the representation of the deadly sins makes the narrative better and adds gravitas to them as a deadly criminal organization.
12. The White Clads
- Anime: Fire Force
The White Clads are dedicated to the Evangelist, aiming to cause the Great Cataclysm to bring the world to nothingness and turn it to Adolla. The organization consists of several divisions, each pursuing its own objectives that collectively contribute to the overall goal.
The White Clads are focused on causing spontaneous human combustion, which can either transform them into a pyrokinetic or a mindless, eternal being. They are also responsible for kidnapping Adolla Burst users and promoting terrorism throughout the globe.
The blend of religion with apocalypse makes the White Clads a great criminal organization. They follow the Holy Sol and are hell-bent on causing terror. Due to their belief, they can easily manipulate members of the Fire Force and make them change sides.
