It is a dark day on the horizon for piracy media distributors. It was recently announced that the Japanese police arrested three men and a company executive on suspicion of organizing a โ€œTranscription Spoiler Site.โ€ This site was assembled to share anime and movie footage and plot synopsis of unreleased pieces, which is an illegal activity.

What are Transcription Spoiler Sites?

Transcription Spoiler Sites are usually made by third-party entities that tend to leak media content not released to the public. In this case, three men, with a company executive were arrested on charges of sharing such content. According to the Content Overseas Distribution Association(CODA), these men have transcribed movies that are copyrighted and published the entire content on their website.

Within a year, they transcribed the entirety of the movie Godzilla 1.0 and the highly coveted anime show Overlord III, which is owned by KADOKAWA Corporation. To generate advertising revenue, they transcribed these pieces without the permission of the rights holders.

CODA’s Role In Cracking Down Perpetrators

Content Overseas Distribution Association or CODA, has roles and responsibilities in cracking down on piracy in Japan. Established in 2002, the organization has been taking several measures to prevent piracy in the country, and the recent case is evidence of its position.

CODA joined hands with the copyright holders of the aforementioned pieces and clamped down on such illegal activities. Investigations run by the Miyagi Prefectural Police suggest that the organization schemed to commit copyright infringement and run this operation to generate traffic and profit for their website.

The complication of the problematic Spoiler Sites is that it does not incentivize the customer to check out the original content. It is almost considered a market substitute and demotivates them to watch the movie or TV show, which largely affects the copyright holder in this case.

Acquiring content and transcribing it in order to generate ad revenue or traffic is an illegal and malicious activity, which is not tolerated according to CODA.
