Masamune Shirow’s magnum opus, The Ghost in the Shell (Koukaku Kidoutai), is getting an anime adaptation. While the announcement was made in May 2025, a new teaser trailer and key visuals of The Ghost in the Shell were released on April 12, 2025. Even though it is scheduled to be released in 2026, an exact release date is yet to be provided.
The Ghost in the Shell manga was first serialized in 1989 and concluded in October 1991, with 11 chapters collected in a single Volume. It was serialized by Kodansha and published by the YOUNG MAGAZINE.
The anime will be produced by Production I.G., Kodansha, and Bandai Namco Filmworks, with Science SARU handling the animation. Mokochan will be the director of the anime, who has previously collaborated with Science SARU as an assistant director of Dan Da Dan. With such great personalities working behind the camera, the expectations automatically skyrocket.
What Is The Plot Of The Ghost in the Shell?
In 2029, human civilization has learned to replace its limbs with robotic parts due to the massive improvement in cybernetics. Major Motoko Kusanagi is a strong-willed woman from the Public Security Section 9. She and her team deal with terrorism, corruption, and dangerous threats. However, when a new nemesis, the Puppet Master, appeared in Niihama City, Section 9 could not get hold of the antagonist.
The Puppet Master is an incredible hacker who strips their victims of their memories using incredible power, which they get from all their robotic replacements. Even Section 6 had to get involved in the case due to its sheer intensity. As Motoko Kusanagi gets dragged into the case, she starts to ask several psychological questions, the answers to which can only be given by the Puppet Master.
Staff Involved With The Ghost in the Shell Anime
The new teaser trailer of The Ghost in the Shell revealed the personalities who will be working behind the camera. The creator of the Cyberpunk-genre anime released a statement with the latest announcement. Here is the list of staff confirmed by the teaser trailer and the creator’s statement.

Anime adaptation-wise, this new THE GHOST IN THE SHELL marks the fourth version following those by Oshii, Kamiyama, and Kise. Alternatively, if we separate GHOST IN THE SHELL and Innocence, categorize the S.A.C. series into Seasons 1, 2, and Solid State Society, divide ARISE into its own series along with The New Movie, and split SAC_2045 into Seasons 1 and 2, this would be the tenth adaptation overall.
Considering the shift in production staff, one could even consider this the first installment of a second generation. The original manga is quite old, so I ask for your understanding on that point (sorry!). That said, I sincerely hope this will once again be an enjoyable visual experience in some form.
