Studio Ghibli is one of the most decorated animation companies ever, having created tons of masterpieces, including Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, The Boy and the Heron, etc. However, for the last few days, Studio Ghibli has been making headlines, but not for collaborating with Hayao Miyazaki.
Rather, it is due to a trend of using OpenAI’s ChatGPT to turn images into Studio Ghibli-inspired character illustrations. Due to the copyright issues, it seemed Studio Ghibli had issued a cease and desist letter of warning against OpenAI’s new Ghibli image generation capabilities. However, it has been revealed that the letter of warning was fake, as Studio Ghibli has denied it.
Studio Ghibli Denies Warning Letter
After the official release of the app to convert images into Ghibli-style character illustrations, the person who posted news about the app’s release revealed that Studio Ghibli had issued a warning letter against them based on copyright and could face serious legal consequences if they failed to take down the app. The picture of the letter spread through social media like wildfire and raised concern among people.
However, when NHK asked the animation company about the warning letter, they denied ever issuing it. Studio Ghibli said, “We have not issued any warning letter.” While Studio Ghibli has not mentioned anything else or where they stand with the latest AI trend, fans were significantly annoyed with the fabricated warning letter as a way to demean the world-renowned animation company.

Fans React To Studio Ghibli’s Stand
While Studio Ghibli is yet to take a stand on the latest trend, fans have expressed their views during a discussion on Reddit.
Blackheart595 commented, “To be fair, if you just looked at that letter for more than half a second it’s beyond obviously rubbish, I’m surprised Ghibli even found it necessary to comment on. Dude couldn’t even make a fake cease and desist letter by himself.”
HeyltsTheMJ said, “10/10 knew it was fake. It was the dumbass on LinkedIn who tried at say the only reason anyone knew about Studio Ghibli now was because of the app attached with the fake cease and desist that had me rolling.”
GhostZee wrote, “There are too many stupid people & those who are gullible who take everything as fact posted by random person without cross checking any info. As much as the guy tried to fake it & wrong, the thought only crossed his mind because people actually fall for that shit all the time…”
Hayao Miyazaki Is Not A Fan Of AI
Due to the ongoing trend, an old clip of Hayao Miyazaki has emerged where he is shown the use of Artificial Intelligence for the first time. While the presenter thought it would make the legendary director interested, the exact opposite happened. Miyazaki has been in the animation industry for more than four decades and has always focused on hand-painted drawings for animation. Studio Ghibli is known for its authenticity and a specific way of doing work. So, Hayao Miyazaki was never a fan of Artificial Intelligence and criticized it when somehow pitched the idea to him.
