All Hashira in Demon Slayer and the Breathing Styles That Define Them

The Hashira are the pillars of the Demon Slayer Corps in Koyoharu Gotouge’s Demon Slayer. They are a group of the most powerful Demon Slayers and are the counterpart to the Twelve Kizuki. Each of the Hashira specializes in certain Breathing Styles. While some created their own Breathing Styles, others learned an old Breathing Style and mastered it. With the internet going crazy over the Demon Slayer Infinity Castle Movie, here is a list featuring all the known Hashira and what Breathing Style they use, to help in prepping for the upcoming movies.

1. Gyomei Himejima

• Position: Stone Hashira
• Breathing Style: Stone Breathing Style

Gyomei Himejima has a towering figure with a muscular build and is the strongest Hashira of the Taisho Era. His physical prowess easily overshadows others, even though the Stone Hashira is blind. With a calm and pious personality, Gyomei is most often seen crying due to his sensitive nature. Gyomei Himejima utilizes the Stone Breathing technique, which harnesses his physicality and hearing to their utmost potential, and employs a Nichirin axe and a spiked flail. The Stone Breathing Technique has five forms, and he is the only person to use this Breathing Style in Demon Slayer. Each form enables him to perform different tasks, including long-range and short-range attacks.

2. Kyojuro Rengoku

• Position: Flame Hashira
• Breathing Style: Fire Breathing Style

Kyojuro Rengoku is easily one of the strongest characters in Demon Slayer, with a blazing personality and heart. The Flame Hashira is courageous and never steps down when it comes to helping others, even if the situation is not in their favour. He has flowing red and yellow hair, golden eyes, and a constant smile on his face. The Flame Hashira specializes in Fire Breathing Style, which was also his father’s Breathing Style. Kyojuro Rengoku is full of spirit and vigour, and his battle prowess further proves it. He knows six forms of Fire Breathing Techniques, from one to five, and nine. All of his moves are visually stunning and set his enemies ablaze.

3. Giyu Tomioka

• Position: Water Hashira
• Breathing Style: Water Breathing Style

Giyu Tomioka is the most recognized Hashira amongst all because he was the one to rescue Tanjiro Kamado after Kibutsuji Muzan’s attack. Since then, he has helped Tanjiro in multiple ways, winning the hearts of the fans. Giyu Tomioka has a gloomy and emotionless look on his face, with long, spiked hair and blue eyes.

He is the second known Water Hashira after Urokodaki Sakonji and likewise uses the Water Breathing Style. Like Rengoku and most other Hashira, Giyu also possesses a Nichirin Sword and has enhanced physical prowess. Giyu Tomioka is a genius when it comes to using the Water Breathing Technique. He can use eleven forms, and all of these moves feature water animations along with the movement of the blade.

4. Uzui Tengen

• Position: Sound Hashira
• Breathing Style: Sound Breathing Style

Uzui Tengen is the most flashy Hashira of all, with his exotic looks and charismatic personality. Instead of swords, Tengen uses two Nichirin Cleavers, which he often uses in the style of nunchucks. He is a muscular man with long white hair, a red tattoo around his left eye, and he wears a headband. It may come as a shock to many, but the flamboyant Hashira has three wives.

Uzui Tengen is a shinobi, and all of his abilities are based on it. He has high poison resistance, great hearing, and is a master of stealth and swordsmanship. Being a Sound Hashira, he uses the Sound Breathing, which is his creation. However, only three forms were showcased in the anime: first, fourth, and fifth. While it is much less than others, it does not keep Uzui Tengen from becoming one of the coolest and potent characters of the show.

5. Muichiro Tokito

• Position: Mist Hashira
• Breathing Style: Mist Breathing

Muichiro Tokito is the youngest Hashira of the Taisho Era and is the direct descendant of the Tsugukuni family, especially Michikatsu Tsugikuni, a.k.a. Upper Moon 1, Kokushibo. He has a short stature, with long black hair with green highlights, and sea green eyes. Being a direct descendant of Kokushibo, Muichiro is quite powerful, even though he is young. During the Taisho Era, he mastered all seven forms of Mist Breathing, becoming the most skilled user of the style. Combined with his extrasensory perception, exceptional strength, and sharp reflexes, he stands out as a truly formidable Hashira.

6. Sanemi Shinazugawa

• Position: Wind Hashira
• Breathing Style: Wind Breathing Style

Sanemi Shinazugawa is an angry fellow with multiple scars on his face. He has white hair, with large eyes and small pupils. Since he keeps his shirt open in the front, it can be seen that his body is covered with scars. He is shown to be a hot-headed, stubborn, and arrogant character with a dismissive personality. The Wind Hashira is the elder brother of Genya Shinazugawa. Sanemi is a master swordsman and the most skilled Wind Breathing Technique user of the Taisho Era. He had an unknown master who helped him in learning nine forms of the Wind Breathing Technique.

7. Mitsuri Kanroji

• Position: Love Hashira
• Breathing Style: Love Breathing Style

Mitsuri Kanroji is the most gullible and lovable Hashira of all. She has a positive and jolly attitude toward others, with an emotional and passionate personality. Mitsuri has a unique look, with pale green eyes, long pink hair, with the front bangs and the end tips colored green. Mitsuri can use Flame Breathing since she was a student of Kyojuro Rengoku, but later developed a new Breathing Style called Love Breathing. She mastered forms of the technique, first, second, third, and fifth. Mitsuri’s techniques include the use of his flexibility, and her whip-like Nichirin Blade can be used for long-range as well as short-range attacks.

8. Obanai Iguro

• Position: Serpent Hashira
• Breathing Style: Serpent Breathing Style

Obanai Iguro is a man of average stature, with a mask and a snake around his neck. He has black hair and his right eye is yellow, while the left one is blue. Obanai strictly adheres to the Demon Slayer Corps’ rules and holds little tolerance for those who disregard them. He is the creator and the user of Serpent Breathing Style, and has mastered five forms of the technique. Apart from his Breathing Style, he also has enhanced physicality, and the snake around his neck also aids him during battles.

9. Kanae Kocho

• Position: Flower Hashira
• Breathing Style: Flower Breathing

Kanae Kocho is the elder sister of Shinobu Kocho, the Insect Hashira, and is one of the strongest Hashira of the Taisho Era. She has long black hair with two large butterfly hairpins. She had purple eyes and a serene smile on her face. Kanae’s mastery over the Flower Breathing Style saw her use five forms: second, fourth, fifth, sixth, and final. She is an extremely talented woman and a master combatant.

10. Shinobu Kocho

• Position: Insect Hashira
• Breathing Style: Insect Breathing Style

Shinobu Kocho resembles her sister in looks, with black hair and large butterfly pins. However, the tip of her hair is dyed dark violet, matching her eyes. Shinobu appears to have a friendly demeanor, but inside, she loves teasing others and is sardonic about it. She lacks physical strength, which led to the development of the Insect Breathing technique. The Breathing Style is featured to have four different attacks, and when combined with enhanced reflexes, agility, and immense stamina, easily makes Shinobu a fearsome Hashira.
