The Darwin Incident! A new genre-bending anime on the way that’s equal parts X-Men and Planet of the Apes. The Darwin Incident, the award-winning manga about a human-chimp genetic experiment, is getting an animated adaptation.
The Darwin Incident Premise
Talk about a unique protagonist. The Darwin Incident follows Charlie, a 15-year-old who’s literally half-human, half-chimpanzee thanks to some shady eco-terrorist science experiments. After being raised by a normal family, Charlie finally gets to experience high school life…until his chimp creators resurface with a sinister new plan.
It’s a wild AF premise that blends superhero action with deep thoughts on animal rights and genetic engineering. Basically, it’s the anime version of that Brendan Fraser flick Monkeybone, but good.

The Hype Is SO Real
Why wouldn’t it be! The anime is being produced by Toho Animation, the same studio behind heavy hitters like My Hero Academia and Kaiju No. 8. So you know the production values are gonna be great.
The Darwin Incident is not just popular but critically acclaimed as well. It has:
- Won the prestigious Manga Taisho award.
- Received an Excellence Award at the Japanese Media Arts Festival.
- Been a finalist in the General category of the 47th and 48th Kodansha Manga Awards.
Conclusion (Chimps are better than humans)
In an ocean of safe isekai fantasy retreads, it’s refreshing to see an ambitious new anime IP tackle such heady social themes wrapped in bonkers sci-fi action. If done right, The Darwin Incident could be this generation’s thought-provoking cult classic like Neon Genesis Evangelion.
Just please, I beg of you, don’t go full Planet of the Apes and make the human-chimp hybrids too realistic. Those rendered primates were more terrifying than any kaiju.
