Although 2024 has some gems, there were promising projects that disappointed fans. Whether the narrative or the animation fell flat, these franchises were far from the best shows of the year. Titles like Uzumaki and Ninja Kamui come to mind that started strong, but plummeted with its later installations. Letโ€™s take a look at the shows that disheartened fans.

What Went Wrong With Uzumaki?

Junju Itoโ€™s Uzumaki is one of the best horror mangas in the genre. The curse of the Spiral plaguing Kurรดzu-Cho ushered a unique and unsettling plot that fans seemed to enjoy. Due to the mangaโ€™s popularity, the anticipation for an anime adaptation was inevitable. Initially announced in 2019, Adult Swim revealed that a show is in the works.

Uzumaki Still from the show

After further delays, Uzumaki was finally scheduled to be released on Sep 28, 2024. With the first episode being released, fans believed the adaptation to be one of the best shows of Fall 2024. However, since the second episode, the highly-coveted Junji Ito franchise became one of the most hated shows of this year.

The animation was noticeably grotesque, the pacing was worse and fans did not hide their disappointment. Executive Producer of the show Jason DeMarco came out and addressed the backlash and claimed they were โ€˜screwed overโ€™ by the higher officials. Although the production was slightly better, the recognizable downgrade from Episode 1 made it harder for fans to support.

What Happened to Ninja Kamui?

Ninja Kamui, produced by E&H Production, was also one of the most anticipated anime of 2024. The story is about former assassin Joe Logan, whose family is slaughtered by the organization he once toiled for. With a simple and overarching plot, this show was expected to be a fun watch from beginning to end.

Although it was not applauded like Uzumaki, Ninja Kamuiโ€™s first few episodes showed good animation and a promising start. However, this anime, directed by Sunghoo Park immediately faced backlash for ditching its roots and adapting CGI for its later episodes. Similar to a lot of anime that employ CGI, fans were not happy to see the shift.

When it comes to character development, fans accused the show of circumventing that aspect. The lack of progress that the animeโ€™s protagonist showed was lackluster according to fans who tuned in.
