The sci-fi genre found a new messiah through the Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt starrer Edge of Tomorrow. The movie was released in 2014 and earned $370 million on a budget of $178 million. It was critically acclaimed and became an instant classic. Due to its immense popularity, the sequel to the movie was announced in 2019. Unfortunately, the COVID-19 pandemic halted the project, and since then, there have been no updates surrounding it.

Recently, Netflix announced that Edge of Tomorrow will be coming to Netflix on September 1, 2025. It has brought back the sci-fi movie to the headlines once again, and with it popular Japanese novel, All You Need Is Kill, has also found itself trending. Unknown to many, Edge of Tomorrow is adapted from Hiroshi Sakurazaka’s All You Need Is Kill, which has been adapted into an anime movie.

All You Need Is Kill Is Making Headlines

Edge of Tomorrow, coming to Netflix, has greatly helped All You Need Is Kill with its marketing. On March 13, 2025, it was announced that Hiroshi Sakurazaka’s All You Need Is Kill will be adapted into an anime film. Studio 4°C was in charge of the animation, and Kenichiro Akimoto directed the movie. All You Need Is Kill is produced by Warner Bros. Japan, with the parent company producing Edge of Tomorrow.

On June 9, 2025, a couple of months after the film’s announcement, All You Need Is Kill premiered during the Annecy International Animation Festival. On August 4, 2025, Fantasia International Film Festival screened the movie in front of 700 attendees.

How is Edge of Tomorrow Helping All You Need Is Kill?

Since Edge of Tomorrow is based on the All You Need Is Kill light novel, it indirectly helps the latter by bringing the spotlight on it. All You Need Is Kill revolves around a new recruit in the United Defence Force, Keiji Kiriya, who is provided with a powerful exoskeleton and sent to kill powerful extra-terrestrial beings called “Mimics”.

Unfortunately, with no prior combat knowledge, Kiriya is killed quickly. However, he wakes up the day before his death and discovers that he has been trapped within a loop. Slowly, he learns new combat styles and gains experience with each death. During his mission, he meets Rita Vrataski, who is also trapped within a time loop. Together, they discover how to defeat the “Mimics” and get out of the time loop permanently.

The story in All You Need Is Kill comes with a brilliantly crafted twist by Hiroshi Sakurazaka. While Keiji Kiriya serves as the central protagonist in the novel, the film adaptation shifts the narrative to Rita Vrataski’s perspective. Although Edge of Tomorrow draws inspiration from All You Need Is Kill, it introduces several major changes, particularly in the ending.

With a possible sequel for Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt’s starrer in talks, it could potentially further help the anime film with its marketing.
