What is the Great Cataclysm in Fire Force?
The Great Cataclysm took place almost 250 years ago, from the present year, 198. During the incident, flames exploded throughout the world, destroying most parts of the planet and leaving it uninhabitable. The incident was so massive that continents were torn down, with multiple countries getting completely obliterated. Adolla Burst, or the flames that caused the destruction, originated in Adolla, and it was all The Evangelistโs wish. The Evangelist specifically targeted Japan, as it had the largest number of atheists. With less spiritual roots, it was easier for them and their underlings to manipulate the country after the incident.

As a result, Japan was less affected in comparison to other countries. Because of the Great Cataclysm, the Tokyo Empire saw a massive number of migrations, which led to several cultural changes. Shinra Kusakabe and Inca Kasugatani, the Fourth Pillar and Fifth Pillar, experienced the pre-cataclysm world, and even though it looked the same, there was something different about it. When compared to the present time, it was weird and eerie as there was no Spontaneous Human Combustion. They broke the fourth wall and experienced how the world of Fire Force came about and their drawings on paper. They saw the real world, which was technologically quite advanced, but would soon face its doom through the Great Cataclysm.

What was the effect of the Great Cataclysm?
Apart from causing massive destruction, the Great Cataclysm distorted the structure of the world. It granted the animals the potential to speak while the humans suffered from Spontaneous Human Combustion. During Spontaneous Human Combustion, humans would randomly start burning. While few people were able to control the flames and harness the energy to become pyrokinetic, others became mindless infernals and caused destruction.
Aftermath of the Great Cataclysm
The Great Cataclysm left a massive scar on humans, but Sumire Sugita, the Seventh Pillar, exclaimed that the incident did not reach its full potential and failed to burn everything away. One of the reasons for this was the lack of pillars. Each pillar represents a negative emotion, and all eight pillarsโ power was required to make the incident a success.
Since the Great Cataclysm causes destruction, it needs those negative emotions to fuel its magnitude. As a result, the Evangelist and White Clad are trying to cause another Great Cataclysm since all eight pillars have been located. Fortunately, there is a way to counter events. Since it is fuelled by negative emotions, hope and positivity are the key to countering it.
