In Japan, the struggles of a salaryman are no joke – long hours, low pay, and constant pressure define their daily routine. Ganglion, the short-form anime by Hisaya Shiraiwa and Takashi Itsuki, takes this grim reality and twists it into a sharp social satire. Blending absurd comedy with workplace critique, the series turns a mundane life into something strangely heroic.
What Is Ganglion About?
Ganglion follows the life of Kenji Isobe, who works for the evil organization, Ganglion. He is a soldier who is a part of the Belve squad under the leadership of Minoru Kageyama. The sole task of the team is to cause chaos in Tokyo, either through the “Tokyo Cedar Pollen Operation” or the “Mount Fuji Demolition Plan”.
However, the Belve squad is always defeated by the hero, Hopeman. As a salaried member of Ganglion, Kenji is expected to perform unreasonable tasks or risk being fired. Also, no one is allowed to know his identity. For that reason, Kenji needs to always keep his bodysuit and mask on in public. It showcases the uneventful life of a salaryman soldier.
A Satirical Look at the 9-to-5 Job Through Ganglion’s Eyes
Ganglion anime highlights the monotonous life of a salaryman who works for an evil organization. Being evil and working for an evil organization are two different things. One is done for motive, while the other is done to afford the basic necessities of life. Even though Kenji Isobe is a soldier of the Belve squad, his life is no different from a 9-to-5 office clerk. He goes to work in a uniform like an office clerk who wears formal dress. However, Kenji’s uniform is a yellow and black bodysuit, mask, and a helmet with “Ganglion” written on it.
Like each team is given a specific target, the Belve squad also has such a task. Their task is to terrorize Tokyo and show results to the higher-ups. Through the “Tokyo Cedar Pollen Operation,” the organization caused chaos in Tokyo. Unfortunately, Hopeman’s arrival led to a crushing blow for the entire Belve squad. Hopeman somewhat represents the hardships at work, and at times, it overwhelms an individual. After brushing aside his injuries, Kenji returns home. He travels in public transport, with people giving him disgusted looks, since he is still in his uniform.
After a hectic day, he finds little comfort in a roadside shop. He orders dinner and enjoys sake and a hot meal, while chatting with the shop owner. The shop owner is pretty compassionate, since he is a regular customer. Afterward, he heads home to take a rest and get ready for another day of hard work.
The parallels the anime draws with the real world are insane. Despite its comedic tone, Ganglion leans heavily on social satire. It uses minimalist animation and deadpan humor to exaggerate the absurdities of corporate life. A good night’s sleep is not enough to remove all the fatigue after a hard day’s work, especially if someone beats them left and right. Unfortunately, he cannot afford to get fired as he still has a family to feed.

Broadcast Details Of Ganglion
According to the official website, Ganglion anime premiered on Friday, October 3, 2025, at 20:30 (JST). It airs every Friday at the same time. TV Tokyo, BS Yoshimoto, AT-X, and TV Osaka broadcast the anime. Studio Maf is the animation studio, and the episodes are only 3 minutes long. It will be a short anime since there is only one volume consisting of 12 chapters.
Hisaya Shiraiwa and Takashi Itsuki began the serialization of the manga on June 19, 2007. They concluded it on September 18, 2007. It was published under Yoshimoto Books and later Wani Books. The anime is being directed by Ayumu Watanabe (Komi Can’t Communicate), and the music is composed by Takeo Asami. Due to its short length, the anime only has the ending theme, NIKO NIKO TAN TAN.
Fans On Ganglion
Irrespective of what the fans wished for, Ganglion has turned out to be a short anime. Soon after the release of the first, the fans expressed their disappointment and appreciation. Some felt that it could have been an hour-and-a-half episode, but the showrunners cut it down. For that reason, they lost their enthusiasm for watching the anime. The runtime was a major issue as 3 minutes is too short to properly showcase a story.
Only a handful were optimistic about Ganglion. However, it was not for the plot, but for the detailing. They mentioned that since the manga was written during the late 2000s, the anime featured flip phones. Flip phones were quite popular during those days. Unfortunately, the question remains whether Ganglion would reach such popularity after a disappointing runtime.
