Hiroshi Shimomoto’s Smother Me recently had its 3rd chapter released on Manga Plus and is quickly gaining notoriety. Released on Oct 3, 2024, this manga is listed as the author’s first-ever serialization on Shonen Jump+. This Hell’s Paradise-esque storyline of killer assassins crossing paths already has a promising start to it.
What Is Smother Me About?
As a kid who possessed a hopeful glare, this was immediately destroyed after he found out that he was abandoned by his parents in the underbelly of Detroit, Michigan. Smother Me follows a young boy named Akio, who is trained to be a serial assassin by his mentor Moreh. All hope is lost, and killing becomes a job for him until he comes across Lynne, a blind woman who changes his philosophy on life.
Significance of Animal Names in Smother Me
The aforementioned Akio is renamed ‘Snake,’ as his method of killing follows quick movements accompanied by sharp strings that are tied to his fingertips. As his name suggests, this above-intermediate assassin slowly climbs the rankings without the knowledge of how he wants to be perceived in his later years which is to be shown in the upcoming chapters of Smother Me.
Rodin Mascis, nicknamed ‘Elephant’ is a top-class hitman in Detroit. His tall and muscular frame is most certainly an advantage, as he stomps his attackers to death, similar to a wild Elephant that goes rogue. Although he is set up as leagues above Snake, he manages to be defeated by Akio’s strong desire to see Lynne get her vision back.
Described as ‘The Head Of All Of Detroit,’ Monkey is an alcoholic woman who is held in high regard by the underworld criminals. The latest installation of Smother Me teases her powers, as she desires to play Detroit-style Russian Roulette with the mafia, similar to what Moreh did with Snake.

According to Manga Plus, the fourth chapter of the manga is scheduled to be released on October 23, 2024.
