Lazarus anime Episode 7 explores the once-miracle drug Hapna, now deemed to be the end of humanity, to its core, revealing that it is related to Analgesia. Analgesia is a phenomenon where individuals do not have the ability to feel pain of any kind. Shinichiro Watanabeโ€™s magnum opus does a great job is creating the right compound by mixing science, artificial intelligence, and human emotion in the right proportion, leading to the rise of Hapna, with Analgesia as the background work.

After infiltrating The Tower of the Truth, Team Lazarus comes in contact with a powerful AI named Naga. The concept of Analgesia was first brought up during this scenario, and then it took a new turn in episode 7. After discovering the four islands that Dr. Skinner brought, Axel, Doug, Leland, and Christine set out to each one to find a valuable clue that might lead them to the โ€œmad scientist.โ€ Rather than leading to Dr. Skinner, it helped them in understanding the reason behind his buying the islands and helping the local residents.

Exploration Leads To Identification

Each member ventured to the sunken islands trying to find something related to the mission. While Doug, Christine, and Leland came back empty-handed, it was Axel who got an earth-shattering piece of information from one of the local residents. While he was exploring on a boat, he saw that the boat owner had a little cut on his cheek. When he pointed out, the person wiped it and said it was from a flying fish, and he did not notice it since he does not feel any pain.

Anyone who has taken Hapna will say the same thing, but the individual did not take it. He was born without the ability to feel pain, and so did the others on that island. It surprised Team Lazarus, but they were quick to notice the similarity. Due to their Analgesic behaviour, Dr. Skinner bought those islands so that he could experiment on them for creating Hapna.

Did Dr. Skinner Weaponize Pain Relief to Restore Nature?

While it points to the direction that Hapna might be inspired by Analgesia or the latter is its origin, until the curtain rises totally, nothing can be said for sure. The residents of the sunken islands being naturally immune to pain provides the watchers with an analgesic background for sure. It is known that science can be a boon as well as a curse.

Since everyone held Dr. Skinner in such high regard, he could have easily done something for the greater good of humanity. When Lazarus Episode 7 explored the serenity of the blue sky and sea, and peace, with the context of humans ignoring global warming and harming the environment, it raises the question, whether Dr. Skinner purposely made a drug to end humanity and bring back nature to its finest. Looks like making the world analgesic, and letting them feel the ultimate pain, i.e., fear, was something the mad scientist planned a long time ago.
