One of the biggest manga awards in the Japanese publishing industry announced nominations for the 70th Shogakukan Manga Awards on Thursday, 5 December 2024. The Shogakukan Manga Awards is Japanโs oldest manga award with it being first awarded in 1955. Titles such as Monster, Zatchbell, 20th Century Boys, and Bleach have had the privilege of being bestowed with this honor.
The 70th Shogakukan Manga Awards winners will be declared on 17 January 2025 and each winning work will receive a bronze statuette called ‘Minori’ and a sum of 1 million yen!

Previously, there were 4 subcategories: Best Childrenโs Manga, Best Shonen Manga, Best Shojo Manga, and Best General Manga. The division of nominees was scrapped since the 69th Shogakukan Manga Awards!

Manga Selection Process for the Awards
Manga and Comic works published in magazines, books, or online platforms after 1st January 2024 are eligible.
Judges, including manga artists, critics, editors from magazines and newspapers, members of cultural organizations, bookstore staff, and general readers, are invited to recommend notable works. Additionally, the secretariat will independently gather eligible works during this period.
The recommended works undergo critique and discussion to shortlist candidates. Judges then provide their recommendations and comments on the nominated works, which are compiled for further evaluation. A final judging committee reviews these selections and determines the winners.
