What is Kaiju No. 8 about?

Kaiju No. 8 is illustrated and written by Naoya Matsumoto. The manga has been serialized since July 2020 by Shuiesha’s Shonen Jump. The anime adaption, produced by Production I.G. aired from April 2024 to June 2024. Kaiju No. 8 is set in a world where monsters called Kaiju invade the earth, posing a threat to humanity.

The narrative revolves around our protagonist, Kafka Hibino who strives to join the Japanese Anti-Kaiju Defense Force, which as the name suggests, is an organization created to combat them. This is due to a promise with his childhood friend, Mina Ashiro, who turns out to be very skilled, and later becomes the Captain of the 3rd Division. And here is the twist! Kafka, who ended up working for the clean-up crew of JAKDF, is infected by a parasitic creature which enables him to turn into a Kaiju!

The special episode, Kaiju No. 8 “Hoshina’s Day Off” will be aired alongside the Season 1 compilation film in 32 Japanese theatres from March 28, 2025, for 3 weeks! The special episode focuses on Reno as he struggles to utilize his free time properly. His curiosity is piqued when he notices that Hoshina appears to have his plans. With a desperate desire to uncover the mystery, Reno makes it his mission to follow Hoshina and Iharu is his partner in crime!

Kaiju No. 8 season 1 establishes the thematic concern of the series quite effectively of metamorphosis and humanity. Kafka manages to secure victories in combat while maintaining his secret for most of the series. However, things soon go out of control when his team is unable to take care of a Kaiju with a nuclear-level threat. Cornered and desperate with his friends in trouble, Kafka is forced to reveal his Kaiju form to his teammates. The narrative ups the stakes as the higher authorities of the defense force consider executing him.

The climax of Kaiju No. 8 season 1 featured the head of the Defense Force, Isao Shinomiya challenging Kafka to a duel. The latter being initially overpowered by the former, loses control and enters into a berserk state. Having almost killed Isao, Kafka is able to regain control of his body – a testament to his humanity. However, his efforts to save Isao resulted in stabbing his heart.

The season ends with Kafka still alive but now a complete Kaiju. With Isao’s support, he can finally look forward to serving the Defense Forces without any worries. Meanwhile, Kaiju No. 9 turns out to be an elite chess player who has an elevated understanding of human society and nature. The series ends with the revelation of his motive to launch an attack on the Defense Force.
