New Line Cinema’s “LOTR: The War of the Rohirrim” anime film received a new trailer on 23rd August 2024. The anime film, directed by Kenji Kamiyama is a prequel to the live-action The Lord of the Rings trilogy film series directed by Peter Jackson, based upon J. R. R. Tolkien’s The Lord of The Rings novel.
New Line Cinema Presentation, Warner Bros. Animation, and Sola Entertainment Production’s upcoming anime movie The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim is set to hit the theatres in the United States on December 13, 2024, and worldwide distribution on December 11, 2024. The trailer for the anime film was released on the official Warner Bros. Pictures YouTube channel.

LOTR: The War of the Rohirrim Plot
The story is set 183 years before the events of the original The Lord of The Rings movie trilogy and some thousand years after the incident of The Rings of Power. The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim will focus on the fate of the House of Helm Hammerhand and the legendary King of Rohan. Helm and his people are forced to defend themselves in their ancient fortress, the Hornburg (later known as Helm’s Deep), when a cunning and ruthless Dunlending lord, Wulf attacks them to avenge his father’s death. As things get worse, Helm’s daughter, Héra, must find the courage to lead her people and fight against the enemy determined to destroy them.

The upcoming anime movie LOTR: The War of the Rohirrim is directed by award-winning filmmaker Kenji Kamiyama (known for the TV series Blade Runner: Black Lotus and Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex).
Under Kamiyama’s direction, the film is produced by Jason DeMarco and Joseph Chou, who earlier collaborated on Blade Runner: Black Lotus, alongside Oscar winner Philippa Boyens, part of a screenwriting team in The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies. The screenplay is written by Phoebe Gittins & Arty Papageorgiou and Jeffrey Addiss & Will Matthews. The story is written by Addiss & Matthews and Boyens, based on the characters created by J.R.R. Tolkien. Carolyn Blackwood, Sam Register, Fran Walsh, Peter Jackson, and Toby Emmerich are the film’s executive producers. The creative team returning from The Lord of the Rings Trilogy includes renowned Tolkien illustrator John Howe, and Oscar winners Alan Lee and Richard Taylor.
Producer Philippa Boyens highlighted the film’s deep dive into the lore of Middle-earth, saying, “In the appendices where the story is drawn from, we get these quite interestingly drawn male characters, and then we get this young female character who is never named — and that was really interesting to me.” She continued, “We know Helm has a daughter, and we know that she was central to the conflict that happened. But myself, and especially screenwriter Phoebe Gittins, were drawn to her. We could feel the weight of being that unnamed daughter, which immediately piqued our interest: Who was she? How did she live?”

The film features a skilled voice cast, including Brian Cox (Succession) as Helm Hammerhand, the powerful King of Rohan. Gaia Wise (A Walk in the Woods) voices his daughter Héra, while Luke Pasqualino (Snowpiercer) portrays Wulf. Miranda Otto, renowned for her unforgettable, award-winning role in The Lord of the Rings Trilogy, returns as Éowyn, Shieldmaiden of Rohan, and also acts as the story’s narrator.
The voice cast also includes Lorraine Ashbourne (Netflix’s Bridgerton), Yazdan Qafouri (I Came By), Benjamin Wainwright (World on Fire), Laurence Ubong Williams (Gateway), Michael Wildman (Fast and Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw), Jude Akuwudike (Beasts of No Nation), Shaun Dooley (The Witcher), Janine Duvitski (Benidorm), and Bilal Hasna (Sparks).
