With the increase in the popularity of the entertainment industry, piracy has equally increased, letting people get easy access to different forms of entertainment. With the manga and anime industry going mainstream, the same has occurred for them also, with Mangadex being one of the leading piracy sites to read manga online. However, the scenario might change soon as legal actions are being taken to takedown these online manga reading sites.

Not only are these sites illegal, but they are harming the original creators by making people choose the easy way out instead of buying manga or taking a subscription. With the manga and anime industry being one of the largest industries in Japan, several production houses and publishers have joined hands against these illegal distributions. As a result, Mangadex has received a notice from the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) to take down several chapters and titles featured on the site.

What Is Happening With Mangadex?

Mangadex includes manga, manhua, manhwa, etc., and for that reason, the DMCA notice was sent to them due to the joint efforts of several publishers like Kodansha, Square Enix, Kakao, etc. As a result, more than 700 titles were affected on the illegal reading platform, with the numbers might increase in the future. Popular series like Gachiakuta, Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest, Bungou Stray Dogs, etc., have been removed from the site. Apart from titles, several chapters from different titles have been removed.

Mangadex is not the only one affected, with other pirated sites also having to pick up the mess they created. Within the span of a few days, both the licensed and unlicensed titles have been removed. The situation has also led to a few fans questioning the removal of unlicensed titles since they have no other way of reading them. As things stand now, Mangadex has to abide by the DMCA notice and has to take down any content that might affect them legally.

What Does The Future Hold For Manga Piracy?

While Mangadex is known to be โ€œprofit-free,โ€ there are other pirated sites that have gained massively from piracy. Nonetheless, it does not give Mangadex the right to post unlicensed manga since it is still illegal. However, more than the problem of addressing the piracy issue, another crucial matter should be taken care of. Thanks to Scanlation, the manga titles that were removed are still available online. Even if one site is removed, another might pop up with similar details. Several associations have joined hands with governments to bring a permanent end to the piracy issue surrounding the manga industry.
