In a collaboration absolutely nobody saw coming, the season 7 premiere of My Hero Academia decided to channel some big Star Wars energy by dropping on May the 4th. We’re talking a full-on Jedi mind trick here, folks.
Turns out My Hero Academia creator Kohei Horikoshi is a massive Star Wars nerd. The force is strong with this one – he’s sprinkled all kinds of sci-fi references and character name nods throughout the anime. So, premiering the new season on Star Wars Day? Chef’s kiss levels of thematic synchronicity.
New OP Drops Harder Than a Sith Lord
Setting the tone for Season 7’s drama is the show’s banger new opening “Tagatame” by rock royalty Ling Tosite Sigure. These are the same mavericks behind the nightmare fuel OP “Unravel” for Tokyo Ghoul.
If their latest hard-hitting track is any indication, you’ll wanna brace for some dark side levels of intensity this season. Consider yourselves warned.
The Calm Before the Quirky Storm
The new season kicks off all cozy and domestic, with our main squirt Deku with his scarf. But don’t be fooled by the mundane – this is just the deep breath before the writers sucker punch you with all the angst.
America’s Top Hero Answers All Might’s Batcall
Over in the States, the Air Force was watching footage of all the chaos unfolding in Japan thanks to the Paranormal Liberation Front‘s prison break. Naturally, they were pounding their desks in frustration at not being able to deploy freedom over there.
That is, until America’s #1 hero, Star and Stripe, came swaggering in. Turns out this ultra-powerful reality-warper got a personal batcall from her mentor, none other than the Symbol of Peace himself, All Might!
Without missing a beat, Star ordered her military crew to punch it and get her plane headed for Japan ASAP. No super-villain was gonna disrespect the legacy of her beloved sensei on her watch.
All For One’s True Endgame
Next, the episode lets us in on All For One‘s master plan – and it’s way more devious than we thought. Turns out, snagging Deku’s One For All quirk was just a minor objective. The real prize? The outrageously powerful quirk of America’s #1 hero, Star and Stripe.
He even had the gall to thank all the escaped Tartarus villains for keeping Japan’s heroes distracted while he lined up this epic quirk heist. All For One’s ego is off the charts!
But hey, at least Spinner gets promoted to hype man for the merged Tomura/All For One hybrid going forward. Every super-villain needs a loyal sidekick to monologue at. We’re sure he’s stoked for those front-row seats to the end of the world.
Shigaraki (TomuraAFO) vs. Star and Stripe
Speaking of Tomura and All For One hybrid, we have him here. Dude just had to make a dramatic entrance by menacingly floating down atop a flying Nomu minion. So extra. When the ultra-powerful Star questioned his identity, TomurAFO gave some typically vague villainous non-answer, as he was not sure about his identity.
With the formalities out of the way, TomurAFO launched his first attack, combining three of his freshly stolen quirks into one massive wave of energy blasted straight at Star’s aircraft. The evasion action has already kicked into high gear!
Star & Stripes’ “New Order” Quirk Is Absolutely Busted
Next up in the episode was Mic‘s narration! According to our eccentric play-by-play narrator, Present Mic, this ability lets Star basically rewrite the rules of reality just by calling out her opponent’s name and a new “order.”
Her first move? Removing all the air within 100 meters of the merged Tomura AFO villain to create a vacuum force-field. While the big bad struggled to inhale, Star’s fighter jets unloaded lasers directly at him. But TomurAFO combined some freshly stolen quirks to deflect the beams right back. This forced our heroine to issue another new order, making the lasers “holdable” so she could physically grasp them.
Not wasting a second, Star rushed in and decked the villain square in the jaw with her bare fists – because she had given herself the order to attain super strength on par with All Might’s muscle form!
Star & Stripes Called In The Doomsday
Just when you thought Star’s “New Order” antics couldn’t get any more ridiculous, she hit full maximum escalation mode. First, she physically pinned the still-struggling Tomura AFO to her aircraft and issued a new order: if “Tomura Shigaraki” moved at all, his heart would instantly stop. Basically, a fancy way to pause the entire fight.
Unfortunately for Star, her opponent was already pulling some Master Hand mind transfer shenanigans to bypass her rules. Tomura AFO revealed their body merger was 98% complete, leaving just a sliver of Tomura’s consciousness.
With the unrelenting villain on the move again, a flustered Star finally admitted she was in over her head, officially declaring Tomura AFO a “global threat.” She hastily contacted her superior, Commander Agpar, to say, “Send in the big guns.”
Next thing you know, she’s shaping a kaiju-sized air-construct version of herself and forming the fighter jets’ lasers into a massive sword dubbed “Keraunos” to whale on Tomura.
But here’s the real kicker: Agpar confirmed he was literally launching HYPERSONIC INTERCONTINENTAL NUCLEAR MISSILES named “Tiamat” to try and vaporize TomurAFO into oblivion!
Animation Still
While themes get delightfully heady, Studio Bones remains an animation beast. Striking that perfect balance of jaw-dropping sakuga and small, emotional character moments, they continue knocking it out of the galaxy.
