This is Studio Colorido’s latest presentation, My Oni Girl. It’s the second movie in the three-movie deal between Studio Colorido and Netflix. This blog will discuss the plot, voice cast, and theme song of the movie.
What’s With My Oni Girl?
The first time we came across this name, the brain went ONII-CHAN (older brother)! And the speculation about it being a brother-sister movie rushed. But being a Nihongo Noob (Japanese – language noob) who can easily confuse Oni with Onii all the theories were wrong.
In the context of the movie name “My Oni Girl,” the term “Oni” (้ฌผ) refers to a type of demon or ogre from Japanese folklore.
Synopsis
Hiiragi, a high school freshman has a habit of saying yes to others to avoid being disliked even though he struggles to make friends. One summer day when unexpected snow fell Hiiragi continued his ways. Felt like something was off. On his way, he came across Tsumugi, a girl, in need of shelter for the night. However, that evening took a turn.
Hiiragi found himself on the verge of an argument with his father. Chose to keep his feelings hidden. With emotions weighing on him, he fell asleep only to wake up in a room. A mysterious masked creature attacked him suddenly, but Tsumugi intervened. They escaped together.
In a moment of respite, Hiiragi noticed something about Tsumugi โ she had horns! She then revealed her identity as an oni (demon) searching for her lost mother since childhood. She clarifies that the “snow” originating from Hiiragi is, in reality, “demons” that stem from individuals concealing their emotions. Individuals who release demons will eventually transform into oni.
Hiiragi, unable to reject Tsumugi’s plea for assistance in locating her mother, embarks on a journey alongside her. Meanwhile, an incident is unfolding in Tsumugi’s homeland, the village.
This tale tracks Hiiragi as he grapples with his emotions and evolves through the escapades he experiences with Tsumugi.
