It has been quite some time since Solo Leveling Manhwa wrapped up. It gained massive popularity and was soon adapted into an anime. The anime also followed the manhwa’s path to success. Even a spinoff was released featuring Sung Jinwoo’s son, Sung Suho. While the manhwa readers know how the story turns, the anime watchers have yet to get into the serious half of the plot. The plot of Solo Leveling involves the 9 Monarchs, who are the most potent people in that universe.
The Absolute Being created two factions, the Monarchs and the Rulers, who represented darkness and light, respectively. The former aimed to destroy the world, while the Rulers protected it. Ashborn/Sung Jinwoo happens to be one of the Monarchs, the Monarch of Shadow. To learn more about the Monarchs, here is a list containing details on all the Monarchs.
1. Antares – Monarch of Destruction

- Abilities – Spiritual Body Manifestation, Fire Magic, Telepathy, Dragon’s Fear, Breath of Destruction, Shapeshifting, Immeasurable Strength, Immense Durability, Immeasurable Speed.
Antares, or the Monarch of Destruction, was the strongest among all the monarchs. He is also known as the King of Dragons. He was so strong that Ashborn also failed to eliminate him. Antares appears at the end of the manhwa, revealing himself as the final antagonist of Solo Leveling.
Antares has a muscular build with red hair, a beard, eyes, and claws. He has a calm mind and has confidence in his abilities. Being the strongest Monarch, he believes that destruction is the only way for their existence. After much struggle, Sung Jinwoo finally managed to kill him during the epilogue.
2. Ashborn – Monarch of Shadow

- Abilities – Monarch’s Domain, Shadow Preservation, Shadow Exchange, Shadow Extraction, Ruler’s Authority, Shapeshifting, Power Bestowal, Immeasurable Strength, Umbrakinesis.
Ashborn, or the Monarch of Shadow, was initially a Ruler. He was the strongest of them all. However, he was betrayed by them and decided to become a Monarch and the King of the Dead. He is the second strongest Monarch. Sung Jinwoo was chosen to be his successor. Ashborn resembles the Shadow soldiers in looks and has armor on, with a sword in his hands. He is the only Monarch who was seen to choose a successor to finish the war between the Rulers and the Monarchs.
3. Baran – Monarch of White Flames

- Webtoon Debut – Chapter 85
- Abilities – Immense Strength, Immense Speed, Spiritual Body Manifestation, Lightning Breath, Hell’s Army, Immense Durability.
Baran was known as the Monarch of White Flames and the King of Demons. He is known to be one of the strongest Monarchs and fought alongside the other Monarchs eons ago. He had glowing white flames for hair and a demon-like face. He was quite muscular and had horns on his head. Being the King of Demons, he has absolute command over the Demons. He was strong enough to push Sung Jinwoo into a corner. While fighting against the Rulers, Antares ordered him and Rakan to get rid of Ashborn since he was becoming more potent.
4. Rakan – Monarch of Fangs

- Webtoon Debut – Chapter 107
- Abilities – Spiritual Body Manifestation, Telekinesis, Power Bestowal, Regeneration, Immense Durability, Immense Speed, Immense Strength.
Rakan was known as the Monarch of Fangs and the King of the Beasts. He was one of the Monarchs to go up against Ashborn. Even though he was strong, Sung Jinwoo still overpowered him easily. During the Solo Leveling timeline, he was still pursuing the motive to usurp the Shadow Monarch with Sillad. He is one of the Monarchs to make an early debut in the manhwa. He is quite muscular, with black hair and animal skin covering his body. He was one of the antagonists in Solo Leveling.

5. Sillad – Monarch of Frost

- Abilities – Immense Strength, Immense Speed, Immense Durability, Ice Breath Attack, Ice Magic, Spiritual Body Manifestation, Sleep Inducement.
Monarch of Frost, Sillad, was also known as the King of Snow Folk. He formed an alliance with Rakan to get rid of Ashborn’s successor, Sung Jinwoo. He is the supreme commander of the Ice Elves and their leader. Sillad acts as a supporting antagonist in Solo Leveling. He has pale blue skin, with white eyes and hair. Sillad is an overconfident Monarch and tries to avoid unnecessary conflict. He has shown up in numerous arcs before being killed by Sung Jinwoo.
6. Tarnak – Monarch of Iron Body

- Webtoon Debut – 140
- Abilities – Immense Durability, Immense Strength, Immense Speed, Telepathy, Iron Body Technique, Spiritual Body Manifestation.
Tarnak was known as the Monarch of Iron Body and the King of Monstrous Humanoid. He is one of the most handsome characters in Solo Leveling. He is the most human-like Monarch, with blonde hair, and green eyes, and wears a long red coat. Like Sillad, he is overconfident but has rationality. He despises the human world and believes Sung Jinwoo is not suitable to be the successor of Ashborn. He was killed by Beru, Thomas Andre, and Bellion during the Final arc.
7. Legia – Monarch of Beginning

- Webtoon Debut – Chapter 137
- Abilities – Immense Durability, Immense Strength, Pledge of Trust, Spiritual Body Manifestation
Legia, the King of the Giants, was the Monarch of Beginning. He is a large man with an average height of two people stacked on top of each other. Legia had a long beard, red eyes, bluish skin, long messy hair, and tattered clothes. He acted as the hidden boss of the S-Rank Gate in Tokyo. Even though Legia has a sense of humor, he is quite cunning. Sung Jinwoo was almost tricked into freeing him from the chains. However, Jinwoo killed him by decapitating him.
8. Querehsha – Monarch of Plagues
- Novel Debut – Chapter 215
- Webtoon Debut – Chapter 140
- Abilities – Immense Strength, Pledge of Trust, Mana Manipulation, Venom Inducement, Necromancy, Regeneration, Spiritual Body Manifestation.
Querehsha is the only female Monarch. She is the Monarch of Plagues and the Queen of Insects. Being the Queen of Insects, she showcases insect-like features on her limbs. Other than that, she was quite attractive, with a voluptuous figure, long hair, glowing red eyes, and dark purple lips. Like the queen bees, she bore a motherly instinct for her minions, even though she was bloodthirsty by nature. She was killed by Sung Jinwoo during the Monarchs War arc.

9. Yogumunt – Monarch of Transfiguration

- Abilities – Immense Strength, Levitation, Portal Creation, Spiritual Body Manifestation.
Yogumunt was the Monarch of Transfiguration and the King of Demonic Spectres. Yogumunt was a supporting antagonist in Solo Leveling and was killed by Sung Jinwoo during the epilogue. Like all the other Monarchs, he also viewed humans as inferior creatures.
Yogumunt is an elderly-looking man with red glowing eyes, grey hair, a red blob-like feature on his chest, and a tattered cloak. He also has a mask with horns on his head. Being a Monarch, he was proud of his position but acknowledged that he was no match for Sung Jinwoo.
