One Piece chapter 1149 is out and it is fair to say that things are starting to take a weird turn. Eiichiro Oda has found a unique style of putting some emotional flashbacks that help in connecting several dots. The last arc was about Bartholomew Kuma and Jewelry Bonney, and this time the flashbacks are about two individuals from separate factions. One Piece Chapter 1149 began with Scopper Gaban slicing Saint Sommers in half and saving the Straw Hats.
Elsewhere, Chief Jarul has ordered the giants to burn down the school and library of Elbaph so that the Holy Knights could release the children. As Scopper Gaban was approaching to save the children, Collun called out for his father, letting Gunko figure everything out. He took Collun as hostage, and Gaban had to wield down his sword. Seeing the love between the father and his son, Gunko had a flashback, featuring none other than Straw Hat’s Brook!
One Piece Chapter 1149 Revealed Brook To Be Gunko’s Father
When Collun shouted “Daddy” after watching his father, Scopper Gaban, get seriously injured by Gunko, the latter had a flashback. It featured a young girl, who is most likely to be herself, calling out her father. Two shadow figures were seen dancing, with one a tall man with an afro and a long coat, and the other a little girl who was dancing while holding the man’s hand. Remarkably, the man says, “Yo Ho Ho!!” which is the signature dialogue of Brook, and the little girl says that her dream is to become a pirate.
The dialogue, afro, and long coat signify it to be Brook, and since it is a memory of Gunko, the duo are most likely to be father and daughter. As One Piece chapter 1149 showcased, Gunko did not seem to know about the memory, which clearly indicates that they were subdued, and thanks to Collun and Scopper Gaban’s emotional connection, it returned. After coming to her senses, Gunko seemed to call out to Brook in her mind and huffed.
Why Was Gunko Not Able To Recognize Brook Before?
At first glance, it will be difficult for anyone from Brook’s past to recognize him since he is just bones without any flesh or skin. However, watching that Gunko herself did not know that she had those memories might raise several questions regarding her past. One of the possibilities is that Gunko was separated from Brook during the God Valley incident, seeing how tattered she looked during the flashback.
She was raised by the Holy Knights and became a trusted soldier, all while her memories were subdued. It could be why Gunko does not have a family name, like Sommers belongs to the Shephard family, or Killingham belongs to the Rimoshifu family. Since she is a God’s Knight and has immortality, Imu has shared their powers with her, which could also make her forget about the past. There are several possibilities for Gunko not recognizing Brook, and with One Piece likely to step into another flashback, all answers will be provided by the creator.
