As the anime industry leans further into the mainstream, new titles continue to emerge, yet Kaiju No. 8 has managed to stand out, thanks to the manga’s remarkable success. Kaiju No. 8 anime premiered on April 13, 2024, and April 13, 2025 marked the first anniversary of the anime. Even though it had only 12 episodes in season 1, multiple jaw-dropping moments left everyone stunned. Also, Kafka Hibinoโs character always managed to provide much-needed comic relief in the serious premises. Here is a look back at how Kafka Hibinoโs life changed drastically.
How Kafka’s Personality Lightens the Serious Tone of Kaiju No. 8
Kaiju No. 8 revolves around Kafka Hibino, who worked for the clean-up department of the Japan Anti-Kaiju Defence Force. Even though he wanted to be on the frontlines, he failed the exams every time, making him ultimately give up his dreams. While it seemed like a sad story, his antics were exactly the opposite. His attitude and behavior towards his profession can make even the most serious personality break character.

Naoya Matsumoto has surely added a flair of comedy in his behavior rather than making him a jokester. On top of that, Shigeyuki Miya and Tomomi Kamiya portrayed the same elements in the anime, making the fans instantly connect with them. Even though the plot is serious and involves kaiju terrorizing the city, the characters often find brief amusement through Kafka.
Kafka’s Second Chance Comes at a Monstrous Cost
After Kafka Hibinoโs lifelong dream came to a halt, Reno Ichikawa, his junior, motivated him to pursue it again. During his first mission with Ichikawa, he was injured by a monster and was admitted to the hospital. It was at that time that a small flying monster appeared before him and forcefully entered his mouth, turning him into Kaiju No. 8, which basically meant he was the enemy of humankind. He kept it a secret, and only Ichikawa knew about it.

A total of 5 Divisions in the Anti-Kaiju Defence Force were mentioned, with Unit One and Unit Three based in Tokyo. The captain of the Third Unit, Mina Ashiro, was his childhood friend, and together they vowed to eradicate every Kaiju. Unfortunately, it never happened. However, with one last try, Kafka barely managed to pass the written exam and came last in every form of physical endurance test. Even his getting a temporary role in the Third Unit Defence Force was nothing short of a miracle and was due to him being a laughingstock to the Vice Commander of the Third Unit, Soshiro Hoshina.
Kafka barely showed any progress in physical prowess, but his knowledge of Kaiju anatomy greatly helped the team locate their core and kill them. While he still wanted to eradicate Kaiju, Kafka was thankful he was not entirely useful. The protagonist was always careful not to reveal his identity in front of his teammates. However, when the antagonist of the anime, Kaiju No. 9, appeared, he had no choice but to reveal his identity and utilize his full powers.

Kaiju No. 8 Season One Conclusion Was Not So Great For Kafka
Unfortunately, the decision to save everyone turned against him and treated him as a monster. All his teammates were rooting for him and wished for his safe return. Kafka was sent to a secret facility under the Defense Force, where everyone wanted to kill him and do experiments on him. However, the Director General of the Defense Force, Isao Shinomiya, had other plans. He wanted to make Kafka lose his consciousness to Kaiju No. 8, thus proving he was not someone who could be left in the open.
He used the most potent Numbers Weapon, made from Kaiju No. 2, to fight against Kafka Hibino. Numbers Weapons were the most powerful gadgets against the Kaiju since they were made from the most powerful Kaiju ever to exist. Only the Kaiju who are numbered are considered as great threats and are made into Numbers Weapon upon killing them. Isao Shinomiya used the weapon and thrashed Kafka left and right. Being superior in every sense, the protagonist was no match for the Director General.

While he was being held in a different facility, all of his teammates tried to improve in their ways to break their limits and become stronger. Apart from Reno Ichikawa, Iharu Furuhashi, Haruichi Izumo, Aoi Kaguragi, etc., drastically increased their stats with training and determination. Kaiju No. 8 does a great job of not focusing only on the protagonist and equally distributing the spotlight among Mina Ashiro, Kikuro Shinomiya, Hoshina, etc.
