Summer 2025 has gifted anime fans with several releases, starting with Kaiju No. 8 Season 2, DAN DA DAN Season 2, Sakamoto Days Season 1 Part 2, etc. However, there were also a few hidden gems released in between that most anime fans have missed due to these popular Shounen plots. These hidden gems have been critically acclaimed and, without a doubt, are turning heads as more people become aware of them. From addressing real-world problems like bullying and shyness to fantasy stories, these anime have covered every ground that will widen the viewers’ palettes. Here is a list of the biggest surprises of 2025 Summer Anime lineup.

1. Takopi’s Original Sin

Creator: Taizan 5
Animation Studio: Enishiya
Where To Watch: Crunchyroll
MAL Score: 8.94

Takopi’s Original Sin has become one of the biggest hits of Summer 2025, even though it is a short anime. The story follows Takopi, an alien who came to Earth to spread happiness, but ends up with Shizuka Kuze, who is a victim of bullying and parental negligence. The anime speaks of the horrors of bullying and the extent to which it can hurt a person. It has a rather dark theme with trauma, depression, and moral ambiguity.

Takopi’s Original Sin brings a reality check for everyone with a deep emotional setting. The anime has complex characters, and showcases the mental state of the bullied and bullies equally. It is not always a contrast between good and evil, but instead features the terrible moral costs that lie in between. Takopi’s Original Sin is a hidden gem, and every anime and non-anime fan should give it a watch.

2. The Summer Hikaru Died

Creator: Mokumokuren
Animation Studio: CygamesPictures

From there began an eerie journey for the duo, with the town going through suspicious changes.

The Summer Hikaru Died is one of the most sought-after anime of Summer 2025 and, likewise, has delivered upon its release. The haunting atmosphere, the dilemma between friendship and cosmic horror, great storytelling, expressions, etc., make The Summer Hikaru Died a successful anime. The constant fear of something might happen with loss and love getting tangled provides a new taste to the audience.

3. The Water Magician

Creator(s): Bokutengou, Tadashi Kubou
Animation Studio: Typhoon Graphics, WonderLand
Where To Watch: Crunchyroll
MAL Score: 7.21

Ryou gets isekai’d into a world named Phi, where he ends up learning Water Magic. His hopes of enjoying a quiet life take a hit when he is made to face wild beasts and monsters. However, his optimistic and clever nature, along with his “Eternal Youth” trait, helped him become one of the strongest magicians in Phi. Soon, he begins his journey with Sera and Abel, marking a new phase of history.

Ryou’s laid-back personality is a breath of fresh air to all the viewers who are tired of watching powerful fantasies. The graphics are quite fascinating, especially the water magic ones, creating a visual treat for the eyes. The Water Magician has a relaxing tone, but when it requires picking up the pace, it does it without any problems. Lastly, the narrative is balanced with nothing feeling out of place, potentially making it one of the best anime of Summer 2025.

4. Secrets of the Silent Witch

Creator(s): Matsuri Isora, Tobi Tana
Animation Studio: Studio Gokumi
Where To Watch: Crunchyroll
MAL Score: 7.91

2025 Summer Anime Secrets of the Silent Witch

Monica Everett is the all-powerful Silent Witch, who has slain the Black Dragon and mastered unchanted magecraft, yet she is afraid of public interaction. Her super shy nature forced her to learn magic without chanting spells, even though she can speak. Now tasked with protecting the second prince, she will have a hard time protecting him from the evil forces and overcoming her fear of social interaction.

The plot is quite relatable as several people lack social skills and have a shy nature, even though they are talented. While dangers are lurking everywhere, Secrets of the Silent Witch provides lighthearted humour and a deep emotional resonance. It has a gentle plot filled with magic, and within a few episodes, it has already become one of the most loved fantasy anime of 2025.

5. Ruri Rocks

Creator: Shibuya Keiichirou
Animation Studio: Studio Bind
Where To Watch: Crunchyroll
MAL Score: 7.67

Tanigawa Ruri’s fondness for sparkly objects takes her to the mountains. While exploring the mountains, she meets a graduate student, Arato Nagi, who is pursuing her degree in mineralogy. Getting fascinated by the world of minerals, Ruri made it a habit to visit the mountains with Arato to find new crystals and occasionally take a bath in the river.

Ruri Rocks blends emotional depth with hobby, as it explores both Ruri and Nagi’s friendship and their love for crystals. The animation is exceptionally good, along with the detailed scientific accuracy. Ruri Rocks is like a modern-day treasure hunt with Geology being its foundation.

6. The Fragrant Flower Blooms With Dignity

Creator: Saka Mikami
Animation Studio: CloverWorks
Where To Watch: Netflix
MAL Score: 8.79

Chidori Public High School is infamous for having students who are delinquents, and adjacent to it is the Kikyo Private Academy, an all-girls school with studious students coming from wealthy backgrounds. The contrast between the two is like heaven and hell, and Kikyo Academy bears hatred towards Chidori High. However, when Chidori Public’s Rintarou Tsumugi and Kikyo’s Kaoruko Waguri form an unlikely friendship, things start to shape up differently.

The Fragrant Flower Blooms With Dignity provides a fresh plot from all the Shounen action with a beautiful, yet quiet romantic narrative. The emotional connection between the two main characters is pretty wholesome, and the fans are calling it the best romance anime of Summer 2025. Unknown to many people, the two main characters’ names play a significant role in determining the name of the anime. In Japanese, Kaoruko means “fragrant” or “blooming”, while Rintarou means “dignity.”

7. Clevatess

Creator: Yuji Iwahara
Animation Studio: Lay-duce
Where To Watch: Crunchyroll
MAL Score: 7.90

Alicia’s dream of becoming a hero was fulfilled when she was chosen to be one of thirteen heroes to slay the Demon King Clevatess. However, they miserably failed at their mission and enraged the Demon King, who is on the brink of destroying the continent of Edsea. Things take a turn when Clevatess ends up with a human baby, Luna, who happens to be of the royal Hidenean bloodline.

Clevatess showcases a lot of complexities and moral ambiguity. It has a mature storytelling with a dark background and strong pacing. While Clevatess is seen as a villain by humanity, he turns out to be an anti-hero, making the plot multi-layered. While the tone can be uneven, Clevatess remains one of the promising shows of Summer 2025.
