Dr. Stone: Science Future, which happens to be the fourth and final season of the ongoing anime, aired its first episode on January 9, 2025. Fans have been waiting a long time for it to air. After the manga was first adapted into anime in 2019, it garnered a massive fandom across all countries. There was ongoing tension among the fans regarding how the last season would perform, and it was on the producers to provide the best experience for the fans.

With the episode, it can be said that Dr. Stone: Science Future is on the right course. Episode one featured a face-off between Ryusui and Senku. They were arguing about which would be the best approach to reach the USAโ€”the Rhumb Line or the Great Circle Route. These are navigation terms unknown to most. However, this article covers them so that the audience does not feel left out while watching the episode.

What Is The Rhumb Line? also known as Loxodrome

In Dr. Stone: Science Future episode 1, Ryusui and Senku were arguing about which is the shortest route from the USA to Japan. The former, being the ship captain, wanted to follow the Rhumb Line. The word โ€˜Rhumbโ€™ is derived from the Spanish word โ€˜Rumb,โ€™ which literally means a line that intersects all the meridians.

According to navigation science, the Rhumb Line is a longer route than the Great Circle Route, but it is a much safer route since it is a straight path crossing the longitudinal meridians at the same angle. Ryusui wanted to prioritize the safety of the passengers, even though it would have taken 70 days to reach their destination.

What Is The Great Circle Route?

While Ryusui was busy upholding the Rhumb Line, Senku wanted to follow the Great Circle Route. In plain words, the Great Circle Route signifies the shortest distance between points on the surface of the Earth (Sphere). In this case, it signified the course between Japan and San Francisco (USA).

Senku prioritized this particular route because it would help them reach the USA in 40 days. Reaching there early would ensure that they get to the corn plantation, an essential commodity to create the revival fluid. However, since it is a spherical route, the passengers would always have to be wary of when to steer the ship.

Which Route Was Opted In Dr. Stone: Science Future?

The argument was finally settled by a game of poker. After a stressful face-off, it was Senku who came out victorious, and the Great Circle Route was followed. Even though they were fighting previously, they were set up by another individual. It ultimately helped to bring back peace and leisure on the ship, fulfilling the individualโ€™s ultimate motive.

Dr. Stone is available to stream on Crunchyroll.
