The five scariest scenes from The Summer Hikaru Died manga
1. The โNewโ Hikaru Reveals Himself
- Chapter: 1
The Summer Hikaru Died Chapter 1 saw the two protagonists, Yoshiki Tsujinaka and Hikaru Indou, chatting in front of a store. They talked about the time when Hikaru went hiking and returned a week later. Out of nowhere, Yoshiki asked Hikaru to reveal his identity, as he was somewhat sure that he was not the real one.
With his cover blown, he gave Yoshiki and the readers a shocking revelation that Hikaru had died on the mountain, and the fake one was an eldritch-like being taking up his place. Also, he asked Yoshiki to stay quiet since he did not want to kill him. The scene genuinely left everyone scared, and the fake Hikaru showing his true self was not how the readers wanted to start the manga.
2. Crossing The Forest With Friends
- Chapter: 3
One of Yoshiki and Hikaruโs classmates, Maki, asked them to accompany him to his home since his usual route via the tunnel was under construction, and he felt uneasy traveling through the forest. Two girls, Asako and Yuuki, also joined them. Initially, there was nothing to be scared of, but when the four returned after accompanying Maki to his house, they encountered a ghost inside the forest. It was a woman with an elongated neck, swinging her neck. She was in all white and had long hair. The details were so grotesque that people would have trouble sleeping after witnessing them. No one thought that the return journey would be so scary.

3. Yoshiki and Hikaru Encounter A Ghost At a Diner
- Chapter: 19
While the duo were having a drink at a local diner after their school got over early, they suddenly left, and all the surrounding sounds came to a standstill. They looked around, and there was not a single soul around. They started hearing bells jingling and felt eerie. Yoshiki got scared and looked down to find an entirely black head peeping out of the table. It slowly started to get out, and Hikaru tried to absorb it but failed. The ghost was covered in black and had a head severed, only to be attached through a small string-like thing. It started to make sounds, and Yoshiki was scared to his core. Watching something so grotesque will make anyoneโs heart race. The structure of the ghost was enough to make a healthy individual have a heart attack.

4. Old Man Takeda Transforms
- Chapter: 21
Yoshiki and Hikaru went to Takeda-sanโs house to learn from his father what he knew about the history of the town. The old man was delusional and said that he was the next in line to suffer the grim fate. He explained why the Indou family travels to the mountain and how they became cursed. All of a sudden, Grandpa Takedaโs face started to transform, with facial flesh visibly getting distorted. Hikaru understood that something was wrong, but it was too late. The old man turned into an individual with long hair, and all of it was levitating. He tried to slash the boys with a sword, but was saved by Tanaka. The scene had everything to be scared of – a sudden transformation, possession, jump scare, and even an attempt to murder.

5. Maki Experiences Two Legs
- Chapter: 29
While everything seems to happen around Yoshiki and Hikaru, Maki proves that he is an exception. Even though he has no connection to the otherworldly beings, he sees scary things happening in his room. When he was alone, he saw two legs behind the curtain, under the bed, and under the study table. On top of everything, his parents and big brother were not at home. Everything was only happening from a distance, but one day, Maki saw something outside through his window. As he removed the curtain to have a better look, the two legs were seen levitating behind him, and they touched his forehead. The legs were not normal, with spots around them as if all the blood had been sucked out.
