No fate but Netflix…and chill? The iconic Terminator franchise is getting the anime treatment with Terminator Zero, a new series hitting the streamer on August 29.

In case you forgot your Terminator lore, People expected the AI system Skynet to become self-aware on August 29, 1997, and kick off a nuclear apocalypse by declaring war on humans… Well, that date came and went IRL without any robot uprisings (unless you count that incident with the Roomba…)
But in Terminator Zero, we’re headed back to that pivotal date in 1997 and also flashing forward to 2022. The story follows a future soldier sent back to protect Malcolm Lee, a scientist working on an AI designed to take down Skynet. Think of a modern Terminator tale with our favorite killer cyborgs battling it out.

Skydance and the legendary anime house Production I.G. are executive producing this time-travel thriller. Tomlin promises a gritty, heartfelt take that doesn’t hold back: “I believe in taking big swings and going for the heart.”
Why It Matters
Please let this be better than that Terminator: Dark Fate movie…but with the real-life AI ethics debate heating up, the premise feels pretty timely. It’ll also be fascinating to see the anime spin on a franchise filled with classic action set pieces.
Either way, Netflix is giving fans an anniversary present on August 29 when the show drops. Just tried asking Alexa about her feelings on the robot takeover and she stayed suspiciously silent. I’m sure it’s nothing.
