While Tatsuki Fujimoto’s Look Back won the Film of the Year during the 9th Crunchyroll Anime Awards in 2025, the judges had a tough time deciding the winner since all the nominees were exceptionally brilliant. One of the nominations for Film of the Year was The Colors Within (Japanese: Kimi no Iro), directed by Naoko Yamada. It is produced by Science SARU, the animation studio behind Dan Da Dan.
Initially, the movie was scheduled to release in late 2023, but it was postponed until 2024. It was screened during the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, and then officially released on August 30, 2024, in Japanese theatres. August 30, 2025, marks the first anniversary of the film, and on the auspicious day, Science SARU announced that The Colors Within will be coming to Prime Video in September 2025.
The Colors Within Reveals Release Date On Prime Video
Science SARU has confirmed that Naoko Yamada’s The Colors Within will begin streaming on Prime Video on Friday, September 19, 2025, coinciding with the Japanese theatrical release of Chainsaw Man’s Reze Arc. The movie is also available on Apple TV for a minimal fee, with the exception of sustaining changes based on the country. It was released in North America on January 24, 2025, and within less than a year, it found itself on OTT platforms.
What Is The Plot Of The Colors Within?
High School student, Totsuko Higurashi, has the unique ability to see “colors” of others. These “colors” vary based on the personality/emotions of a person, and range from colors of excitement and serenity to colors of bliss. She can see everything. However, the most intriguing and beautiful colors she ever experiences are from her classmate and guitar player, Kimi Sakunaga.
After encountering Kimi at a bookstore, she lets her know about her piano playing skills, causing them to form a band, along with a music enthusiast and theremin player, Rui Kagehiro. The trio regularly practices at a church on a remote island and strengthens their bond. With stirring affections, they confront the issues in their daily lives.
The Colors Within Is A Critically Acclaimed Film
Soon after its theatrical release, Science SARU’s The Colors Within garnered positive reviews on almost every critic’s website. People readily loved the visual and the auditory aspects of the making, calling it exceptional. The praises even baffled the movie’s director, Naoko Yamada. With all positive reviews and immense popularity, The Colors Within also won awards like the Golden Goblet Award for Best Animation Film at the 2024 Shanghai International Film Festival and many more.
