The One Piece manga features multiple revelations in a couple of chapters. In Chapter 1154, Rocks D. Xebecโ€™s face and his role as the father of Marshall D. Teach were revealed, while in Chapter 1155, it was revealed how the infamous pirate recruited the likes of Edward Newgate, Shiki, Charlotte Linlin, and others to join his crew. Rocks defeated them in the Davy Back Fight and made them join his crewmates.

It shows how powerful the pirate was that he even got multiple legendary pirates to join his crew. While everyone was excited to see Eiichiro Oda lifting the curtain from Rocks D. Xebecโ€™s story, the term โ€œDavy Back Fightโ€ suddenly got their attention. The term is not new to One Piece as it featured during the Foxy Pirates arc. Davy Back Fight is named after the legendary pirate, Davy Jones, and he holds a crucial place in One Piece.

Who Is Davy Jones?

For the One Piece fandom, Davy Jones is a legendary pirate who ended up being cursed by the devil to live on the seafloor. According to Nico Robin, it is believed that the pirate is still living on the seafloor to the present day. Whenever a ship or treasure gets sunken, they are locked away in Davy Jonesโ€™ locker, as he keeps every sunken thing for himself.

While it wraps up the legend of Davy Jones in One Piece, there are other references outside the One Piece verse. In reality, there used to be a pirate named Davy Jones in the 1630s, venturing in the Indian Ocean. On the other hand, Davy Jones is also the name of a character from the popular Hollywood film franchise, Pirates of the Caribbean. However, it remains unknown whether Eiichiro Oda was inspired by either of these scenarios.

What Is Davy Back Fight?

The legend of Davy Jones also extends to a pirating game called Davy Back Fight, named after him. The rules of the game were explained back in One Piece Chapter 306, before the Straw Hats faced the Foxy Pirates. Since Davy Jones takes everything that has sunk, the term โ€œDavy Backโ€ refers to a scenario where pirates take anything they want from their enemies.

With it being the foundation of the Davy Back Fight, the game involves taking members of enemy crews upon winning and vice versa upon losing. When someone does not want a member from the enemy crew, they can take their Jolly Roger. The traded member swears allegiance to their new captain and can never go back to their former crew. As explained by Sanji, โ€œYour comrades and your pride are at stake. If you win, you get stronger, but if you lose, you lose big… it’s a vicious game!โ€
