Three years after Hell’s Paradise anime released its first season, the show is preparing to release its sequel in the Winter 2026 anime season. As part of the buildup, the anime has released several promotional materials, all hinting that the Lord Tensen were going to be a crucial part in the upcoming storyline.
As fans may recall, Hell’s Paradise Season 1 introduced us to the group called “Lord Tensen.” While all members of the group seemed to hold similar control over the Shinsenkyo, they do have a hierarchy, placing Rien at the top as their leader.
What is the Hierarchy of the Lord Tensen in Hell’s Paradise?
As revealed in the Hell’s Paradise manga, Rien was Jofuku’s loving wife. She had come to the Kotaku alongside her husband thousands of years ago after the then-Qin dynasty leader sent one of his subjects to Kotaku to look for the rumored Elixir of Life.
However, right after Jofuku, Rien, and the other people made landfall, Jofuku started experimenting with the ways of Taoism to learn how to gain immortality. During his experiments, he made several artificial beings. Amidst this, Rien made a Tao puppet of herself called Mei.
Later, Rien created six other Tao puppets during her research and gave them the name Tensen. While Mei and the other Tensen were led to believe that Jofuku was their creator, Rien was the one who produced them and later led them as the leader of “Lord Tensen.”

How Many Lord Tensen are There in Hell’s Paradise?
In total, including Rien and Mei, there are eight Lord Tensen. The other Lord Tensen are namely
- Gui Fa
- Ju Fa
- Mu Dan
- Ran
- Tao Fa
- Zhu Jin
After Jofuku passed away, Rien led the other Lord Tensen to continue his husband’s research on immortality. As this research saw the Tensen take the lives of many human beings to extract their valuable Tan, Mei retaliated. In response, Rien punished Mei by reverting her body into that of a child and banishing her from the group.
This is why, while Mei was one of the Lord Tensen, she was living with Hoko in the Hoko village situated in the place between Hourai and Eishuu, Houjo. In reality, Rien was not just trying to help the Tensen become immortal, but she also wanted to use the accumulated Tan to resurrect her husband that died a thousand years ago.
