What Devil Fruit Did Loki Eat in One Piece? Unraveling Theories Surrounding the ‘Sun God’ and His Apocalyptic Claims

One Piece Chapter 1130 titled – “The Accursed Prince” revolves around multiple key moments. The Straw Hat crew members on the ship of the Giant Warrior Pirates are guaranteed their friend’s safety in Elbaf. Additionally, they come across a newspaper article revealing Dorry and Broggy’s updated bounties of 1.8 Billion berries each, and a picture of Luffy in his ‘most free’ form is printed with the cross stamped on his wrist – an obvious allusion to Alabasta and Vivi’s presence. Unfortunately or perhaps incidentally, the straw hat members reading the newspaper, led by Nico Robin, are not completely aware of the symbolism of the cross.

On the other hand, Luffy and his friends traverse a gigantic rope bridge. They hide from the members of the New Giant Pirates. To everyone’s surprise, Luffy decides to descend to the forest below to investigate an ominous presence which is later revealed to be Loki!

Who is Loki in One Piece?

Loki is revealed to be the son of the late king of Elbaf, Harald. He committed parricide in order to obtain the devil fruit which his father formerly possessed. He is extremely dangerous and equally powerful, so much so that “the world would be brought to ruin.” It is only with the collective effort of all the giants of the island that he was restrained.

With his seemingly apocalyptic powers hinted at, Loki has infamously termed the “Shame of Elbaf”.

What Devil Fruit did Loki eat in One Piece?

Knowing the world of One Piece as created by Eiichiro Oda, the devil fruit ability can really be anything. However, keeping in mind the distinct allusions to Norse mythology in this arc, it can be surmised that Loki’s power is also somehow inspired it.

One Piece content creator @writingpanini elucidates upon a few interesting possibilities as to what Loki’s devil fruit maybe and his weaknesses.

• Since Loki is the Trickster God in Norse Mythology, he might have devil fruit abilities revolving around shapeshifting and illusions.
• Trickster Gods also known as the God of Stories or fables. Since ELBAF is the reverse of FABLE, Loki might have devil fruit abilities which can reverse other abilities.
• Loki’s resemblance to Jango can point towards the giant possessing hypnotic devil fruit abilities.
• Furthermore, a tricking ability justifies his eyes being covered.
• Usopp maybe the only natural counter to Loki if he indeed has powers as mentioned above. The Strawhat pirate is the master of lies which means that he will not fall for Loki’s tricks.

Panini’s observations make a lot of sense. However, I feel Loki’s powers will be a little different. Building upon the aforementioned theories, here are the two possibilities which I think are plausible. Let me know down below if you agree or disagree!

Ragnarok or Apocalyptic Model

As mentioned previously, Loki’s powers were capable of the world being brought to ruins. Following Norse mythology, Loki, the god of mischief was responsible for a series of apocalyptic events including natural disasters and calamities which almost destroyed the entire world called Ragnarok. Therefore, his devil fruit may be capable of inducing natural disasters which is going to be one of the strongest powers to be revealed in the series. Whitebeard’s Gura Gura no mi which allowed him to create quakes was only a Paramecia type devil fruit which was so powerful that it facilitated him being an Emperor of the sea. The fruit passed down to Loki has been termed as “LEGENDARY” which can be surmised to be above the grade of Mythical class meaning that by magnitude, regardless of the kind of ability, Loki will possess enough power to destroy the entire Straw Hat Crew and that is an objective fact.

Shapeshifting or Imitation Ability Devil Fruit

In Norse mythology, Loki is god of mischief who possesses the power of shapeshifting. This possibility cannot be ruled out in One Piece due to two main reasons.

Firstly, Loki’s eyes are covered to impair his vision. This clearly points towards the fact that his ability has something to do with his vision. As long as he can see his target, he can impersonate them. This ability can be considered to be a combination of Bon Clay’s Mane Mane no mi which allowed him to copy appearances of those he saw and Catarina Devon’s Inu Inu no Mi, Model: Kyubi no Kitsune which allowed her to transform into clones of the people she saw and utilise the target’s powers.

Secondly, Loki’s reference to the sun god is important. Identity and its subversion is a central tenet of impersonation and imitation. When Loki asserts that he is the sun god who will bring an end to the world, he is slowly but surely taking ownership of the identity of the sun god. Luffy not identifying as the sun god yet complicates things, in favor of Loki. To elaborate, Luffy’s “Gear Fifth” is a form when he is the most free. Occupying a society where his form will be equated with the sun god means that Luffy can start recognizing himself as the sun god finally. However, Loki’s imitation ability would then allow him to access Luffy’s powers and additionally, the straw hat captain may become weak as he doesn’t own his identity completely anymore. Loki’s encroachment upon his identity means that he is no longer the “most free” which is one of the natural counters to Luffy’s new powers.

A shonen manga protagonist needs a villain who can match up to his strength. It is only then that an evolution is necessary. Luffy’s declaration of him being at his peak complicates things. However, Loki’s devil fruit ability as an apocalyptic, disaster-inducing type or an imitation type fits both the criteria of him countering Luffy as well as the strong Norse mythological underpinnings of the manga.
