Shinra and Iris’ relationship, explained

In the first chapter or episode of Fire Force, the writer laid the lines for the Shinra and Iris connection for the fans to see. Shinra arrives at the train station, where Company 8 is fighting with an infernal. After the infernal is defeated, a huge light on the platform suddenly falls on Iris, but Shinra heroically swoops in and saves her. From this moment on, we witness a spark between the two, which started as a mutual respect, but throughout the series, the spark grows into a fiery bond.

There have been many such occasions where both of them have saved each other from not just physical but also mental support as well. Later on in the series, it was found that both characters have similar backstories, which proves why the creator selected these two characters for each other.

Shinra and Iris are deeply compassionate

Before joining Company 8, Shinra had always been feared because of his uncontrollable devilish smile and his powers, which resemble the devil’s footprints; however, inside, he has always aimed to be a hero who wants to save the world from the demons and human combustion. Shinra hates killing or harming humans, which can be seen on many occasions in the story.

Iris is a nun of the Holy Sol Temple, working with Company 8. She consistently offers her prayers for the souls of the infernals who are about to be put down by the Fire Force. She is non-combatant, but Iris puts herself in danger as she believes her role is crucial to calm the general public and also her teammates.

Traumatic Pasts and Inner Strength

It is also true that both of these characters have suffered a lot of trauma in their past, and they use their pain to support and protect others.

The anime has narrated Shinra’s tragic past from the start of the anime and even built the further story upon it. His trauma was born when the White Clad Members killed his mother by turning her into an Infernal demon and kidnapping Sho in the process. After that, Shinra was bullied by his peers at the academy by calling him a devil, as they believed he burned his family after awakening his powers. However, this toxic environment didn’t hinder his dream to become a Fire Force member.

In the early stages of the first season, when Company 5’s captain makes her appearance, Iris‘ tragic past also comes to light. Similar to Shinra, she was also a victim of the evil schemes of the White Clad. Iris was an orphan raised in the Holy Sol Temple to become a nun. White Clad turned one of her closest friends, Sister Sumire, into an Infernal and burned down the orphanage. Despite finding out the truth about the temple and the Infernals, she never lost her faith and still wanted to pray to comfort the people in a dangerous situation.

Shinra and Iris marry in the end

In the manga (chapter 304, “The Hero’s Tale“), which ended last year, it is suggested that Shinra ends up with Iris and even marries her. After winning the war against the White Clad and the Evangelist, Inca suggests to Iris that Shinra, who is a hero now, can have more than one woman in his life, showing Iris’ true feelings.

Inca also straight up asks Shinra to have his seed to make a baby, as she wanted her children to have the blood of the hero, but Shinra states that he only wants to be with Iris, denying Inca’s request and stating his true feelings about Iris.
