“Doppelganger” is quite a common term in Atsushi Ohkubo’s Fire Force. Doppelganger generally means a ghostly counterpart of a human who brings bad luck to the original self. The mangaka took the term but twisted the meaning a bit in his magnum opus. Whenever the term is used in Fire Force, the first name that comes to mind is Sister Iris, who is a doppelganger of the First Pillar, Amaterasu.
Like everything else, doppelgangers are related to the realm of Adolla and are one of the main reasons for Spontaneous Human Combustion. It is believed that every individual has a version of themselves in Adolla, and their personalities are exactly opposite of the original ones. Spontaneous Human Combustion happens when the original individual and the doppelganger merge together.
How Did The Doppelgangers Move From Adolla To Earth?
Adolla is where the doppelgangers reside, but when a human goes through Spontaneous Human Combustion, the doppelgangers take over them. However, some individuals gained control over them, which grants them the ability to manipulate fire at will and unlock their Ignition Abilities. For the Spontaneous Human Combustion to take place, several humans were fed Infernal Bugs that made them turn into mindless infernals and go on a rampage.
Fire Force Season 3 Episode 7 explored that it was done by St. Raffles Convent under the guidance of Sister Sumire, the Seventh Pillar. The hundred and thirteen children there were fed the Infernal Bugs, which ultimately led to the destruction of the convent, with only Hibana and Iris being alive. Sister Sumire turned them into infernals so that they could die and then summon their doppelgangers from Adolla. Watching Iris and Amaterasu, it can be understood how far off the doppelgangers are from the original person.
How Will The White Clad Benefit From Summoning The Doppelgangers?
The White Clad’s motive is to turn the world into ashes, resembling Adolla. For that to happen, they need every human to go through Spontaneous Human Combustion and turn into mindless Infernals. As a result, they are trying to gather the strongest people, like the Pillars, to fulfill their motive.
Since merging with one’s doppelganger turns a human into an infernal, the White Clad is trying extensively to establish it. Turning every human into infernals will cause them to go on a rampage as they will become mindless from the unimaginable pain of having their bodies on fire. With all the fire creatures burning everything, it will potentially turn everything into ash.
