In Re:Zero, someone inheriting the ability of Sword Saint is a boost not only in their rank but also in their battle prowess. The title of the Sword Saint has always been exclusive to the Astrea family, and even though they are a family of knights, only the best of them get to inherit the title and the Sword Saint Divine Protection.
Re:Zero features various Divine Protections, like Wind Evasion Divine Protection, Death God Divine Protection, and Gathering Spirits Divine Protection, but the Sword Sain Divine Protection stands out due to its unique inheritance method. Unlike other abilities, mastering swordsmanship doesn’t guarantee receiving it—someone who has never wielded a sword could inherit its power instead. This unpredictable nature makes it one of the most formidable abilities in the series.
What Is The Sword Saint’s Divine Protection?
The Sword Saint’s Divine Protection is a powerful blessing that grants its wielder unparalleled swordsmanship abilities. It is passed down through lineage, specifically within the Astrea family, to the individual deemed worthy of carrying the title of Sword Saint. The blessing enhances the wielder’s combat prowess, reflexes, and ability to wield the legendary Dragon Sword Reid effectively.
The Divine Protection is not inherited by bloodline alone but is instead bestowed upon the most suitable successor within the Astrea family. When a new Sword Saint is chosen, the previous wielder loses the blessing, as seen when Theresia van Astrea lost it upon Reinhard van Astrea’s awakening. The process is not fully explained, but it seems to be influenced by fate, selecting the strongest or most capable individual in the lineage at a given time.
Abilities of a Sword Saint
The Sword Saint’s Divine Protection grants the user immense mental fortitude, making them resistant to fear, intimidation, or manipulation in battle. Their physical prowess, agility, reflexes, battle awareness etc., improves after inheriting the ability. It allows the user to get near-perfect precision of the enemy’s attack.
Previous Sword Saints
The title of the Sword Saint has always belonged to the Astrea family. As of now, only four Sword Saints have been revealed in Re:Zero. They are:
- Reid Astrea – He was the first Sword Saint and played a crucial part in sealing the Witch on Envy Satella 400 years ago. He was significantly strong since he was able to subdue Satella. He was a redhead with blue eyes and wore a red kimono with an eye patch over his left eye. Reid Astrea had a lustful personality.
- Fribal van Astrea – He was the second Sword Saint to be mentioned in Re: Zero. Nothing much is known about him except that he died during the Demi-Human war. At that time, he did not possess the power of the Sword Saint since it had already been passed down to his niece, Theresia van Astrea.
- Theresia van Astrea – Theresia van Astrea was the Sword Saint before Reinhard van Astrea. Unlike the other Sword Saints, she barely showcased her abilities since her husband, Wilhelm van Astrea, made sure to do everything in her place. She died at the hands of the Witch of Vainglory during the subjugation of the White Whale.
- Reinhard van Astrea – Reinhard van Astrea is the current Sword God, a member of the Royal Guard, and the Knight of Felt. He possesses great strength and was able to strike down Theresia va Astrea after taking down Regulus Corneas. He inherited the Sword Saint’s abilities when he was just five years old.
Members of the Astrea Family
The Astrea family is more than 400 years old, but only a few members have been revealed. The oldest known member of the Astrea family is Reid Astrea, who was alive more than 400 years ago. Several generations passed after him, and then Fribal van Astrea was born. He had a son named Bertol Astrea. Bertol’s wife was Tishua Astrea, and together they had four children – Thames, Carren, Cassiles, and Theresia.
The first three of them died during the Demi-Human War, while Theresia became the Sword Saint. Theresia van Astrea married Wilhelm van Astrea, and they had a son named Heinkel Astrea. Wilhelm van Astrea was given the title of Sword Demon since he was also an exceptionally skilled swordsman like his wife. Apart from that, his ruthlessness during the Demi-Human War became world renowned and he even defeated his wife, who was a Sword Saint. Heinkel married Louanna Astrea, who gave birth to Reinhard van Astrea.
