Who is Meireki Era Daikaiju in Kaiju No. 8? Meet The Forgotten Monster Behind Japan’s Greatest Kaiju Massacre

Kaiju No. 8 Season 2 Episode 8 saw Soshiro Hoshira reveal a few basic details about the Meireki Era Daikaiju to Kafka Hibino at the Ryunei Shrine, which was built in honor of the fallen warriors in the Meireki Era. Every schoolbook has the information about the monster who appeared in Tokyo and caused massive destruction during 1657. It became known as the greatest massacre in human history, with multiple warriors dying and the Kanto region burning down.

Unfortunately, the warriors used primitive methods since advanced technology had not yet been invented, and it is one of the main reasons why so many people died. To the anime watchers, the name of Meireki Era Daikaiju is new, but to the manga readers, it will create a horrific picture in their minds. Be it the monster’s look or its destructive abilities, everything about it has some fearful features. It even found a way to sustain and live through to the present time and repeat the destruction.

How Did The Meireki Era Daikaiju Found Itself In The Present Time?

While the extensive details about the Meireki Era Daikaiju living through to the present time remain unknown, it mysteriously disappeared following the great cataclysm during the Meireki Era. For centuries, there was no information about it, with people believing that the warriors had subdued the Kaiju. However, it most likely escaped to a cave where a juvenile Kaiju No. 9 found it and bonded with it. For the most part, the monster was dormant until the final war in Kaiju No. 8.

The Meireki Era Daikaiju Is More Of A Symbiote Than A Monster

At first glance, the Meireki Era Daikaiju appears to have a human face with ten eyes. It is a muscular monster with multiple Kaiju heads on the shoulders and torso. The monster has a massive figure with a large tail, a mouth on its back, and multiple limbs. It appears to have a certain pattern throughout its body. After taking over Kaiju No. 9, it evolves with a straight opening on its body from its head to its pubis, filled with multiple eyes. The opening is kept intact with four fingers on either side, pulling it.

Being a daikaiju, the monster has a hostile personality toward humans. Its thirst for destruction can overwhelm other Identified Kaiju. The Meireki Era Daikaiju’s symbiotic nature attracts other kaiju to merge with it, creating a more powerful, yet weird-looking monster. Merging with them grants them their abilities, and since all Kaiju have a destructive mentality towards humans, it makes the daikaiju more hostile.

What Abilities Do The Meireki Era Daikaiju Possess?

The Meireki Era Daikaiju’s abilities are far stronger than anything ever seen by the Anti-Kaiju Defence Force. In its original form, it is immensely powerful with unmatched strength, easily destroying a region. While its fortitude level was never recorded at that point, in modern times, when it fused with Kaiju No. 9, its fortitude level was deemed immeasurable by the Defence Force. Even though it has a towering figure, it excels when it comes to speed and reflexes. The monster also has a keen intellect, thanks to fusing with Kaiju No. 9 and growing with it through human connection.

Necromancy is one of the key abilities of the Meireki Era Daikaiju, as it was able to resurrect other Kaiju, including identified ones, using Kaiju No. 9 abilities. It can shoot energy attacks, capable of flattening tall buildings in a fraction of a second. The monster attaches shining runes to its opponents’ bodies, which split them apart and explode when it blinks. Lastly, it also possesses some kind of psychic abilities, since it was able to guide Kaiju No. 9 to itself.
