Devil May Cry anime is back again, with new creators Adi Shankar and Alex Larsen, along with the backing of the OTT giant, Netflix, this time.
Fans were eagerly waiting for the anime’s release on April 3, but they lost it when Netflix released a lyric video trailer, built around a new Evanescence song, Afterlife. The killer soundtrack majestically announces the return of Devil Hunter, Dante, to the genre by fully embracing early 2000s goth-metal culture.
The trailer is around four minutes long and showcases several breathtaking fight scenes from the anime, giving fans a clear picture of what they can expect from Netflix’s DMC. Apart from Afterlife and Rollin by Limp Bizkit, the show runners have included some other bangers of that era, such as Guerrilla Radio, Last Resort, and more.
Evanescence frontwoman the song before Devil May Cry Trailer
Before the release of the song and video, Evanescence lead singer, Amy Lee, posted a video on X, teasing the fans with a cry teased fans with a cryptic countdown and even flashing the iconic devil horns with her hand. The internet became wild with speculation that Evanescence might be releasing a new song or announcing a new tour, but X blew up when executive producer Adi Shankar retweeted the post with a shocked face emoji.
For those who lived through the era of spiky hair, chains, and black eyeliner, the video is a nostalgic dream come true. However, viewers wary of spoilers should proceed with caution, as the video showcases a significant amount of anime footage.
A soundtrack that defines an era
Shankar, who known for productions like Castlevania (2017), Dredd (2012) and The Grey (2011), has confirmed that every new season of Devil May Cry will have a “Different feel”, much like how every game in the franchise carries its own unique tone, specially catering PS2 era. Skankar stated:
“In my DMC Universe, each season will have a different feel to emulate the way each game has a different feel. That means a different theme song each season and a completely different title design each season”
Shankar further stated,
“My DMC Universe is set in a late ’90s/early 2000s PS2 era of the world. It’s not set in modern times. It’s set in my memory of the world, pre- and post-9/11. My music choices reflect this. My series features a mix of hits from that era and greatest musical hits from the DMC franchise.”
He didn’t hold back his excitement, adding,
“You are not prepared for this soundtrack. Anime is not prepared for this soundtrack. Jackpot, motherf**kers!”

A Love Letter to Early 2000s Rock
The show is already leaning heavily into the era’s rock and metal influence. Limp Bizkit’s Rollin’ is featured as the opening theme, and Papa Roach’s Last Resort made an appearance in the official trailer. However, their are other sets of soundtrack similar Evanescence’s Afterlife, which are as mentioned below.
