Imu, the ruler of the world government, sits at the center of One Piece’s biggest secret, and as the series nears its end, fans and viewers are now able to witness more about the character’s abilities. The latest chapter of Eiichiro Oda’s masterpiece has brought in a new revelation to Imu’s Three Abyss Covenants, a power which is also known as Imu’s contract with his allies.
Imu’s contract powers were first seen in the later stage of the Egghead Arc, where we see the gorosei use Imu’s powers and turn into Abyssal beasts. Imu has the ability to brand selected people with a mark, and in turn, they are granted different abilities. One Piece chapters 1167 and 1168 go in depth, explaining more about the Imu’s Three Abyss Covenants.
What are the Three Abyss Covenants by Imu?
According to One Piece manga chapters, the abyss covenants placed by Imu are measured as per the depths of the ocean. Each level grants the user different amounts of power and abilities. Let’s have a look at them below:

1. The Shallows Covenant (or shallow sea stage)
The first stage, which is the Shallows Covenant, is an entry-level stage that is provided to new potential Navy soldiers or the lowest-tier God’s Knights. This covenant grants the users a minor boost in their physical strength and access to the abyssal, which makes them quite formidable on the battlefield. As of Chapter 1168, the story has shown characters Gunko and Shamrock to be some of the characters having the shallow covenant received from Imu.
2. The Depths Covenant (or deep sea stage)
The next stage in Imu’s covenant is the depth covenant, which is provided to elite Holy Knight members. While we have not received any proper names for those who have used this level of power, it is known that the depth covenant grants the user a higher level of regeneration, which makes them impossible to defeat. Along with this, the user also receives potential enhancement and awakening of their powers.
3. The Abyssal Covenant (or the Abyssal sea stage)
The final stage in Imu’s three Covenants is the Abyssal Covenant, which is an ability given to those who are extremely close to Imu’s forces. This is seen to be used by the Gorosei, and is known to have many attributes. The first ability provided is that the user stops aging and has hyper regeneration. Another attribute is that the user can channel a small portion of Imu’s power, granting them supreme Haki and immense awakening powers. The Gorosei also have the ability to communicate amongst themselves telepathically and also the ability to teleport and summon each other using this abyssal power.

Does Shanks have a Covenant Mark?
In chapter 1152, where we see a young Shank having a discussion with Scopper Gaban, viewers notice Shanks having his right arm marked with the symbol of the shallows covenant. It was around the time when Shanks was viewed as the assistant to the Knights of God.

According to a fan theory going viral online, Shanks got himself free from that covenant when he saved Luffy, intentionally sacrificing the same right arm that bore the mark. This move saved him from the eyes of the world government and Imu himself.
