As new and innovative shows like Dandadan and Chainsaw Man are on the rise, the Japanese Anime industry is said to reach a point of no return. Singaporean organization Media Partners Asiaโs (MPA) recent report titled โThe Future of Japanโs Video Industryโ talks about the growth of the billion-dollar business, and is a groundbreaking investigation into the state of Japanese media and anime.
Japanese Anime Industryโs Growth Over the Years
Across all Japanese media, anime remains the most popular medium. With a global reach, animeโs astronomical growth exhibited talent and perseverance through all highs and lows. As the industry grew in popularity, revenue generation evidently grew along with it.
In 2014, the anime industry was worth US$13.5 billion. Although these are impressive numbers, revenue has increased exponentially. According to MPA, the Japanese-originated business will be worth US$31.8 billion in 2024.

Increase in Total Revenue and Economic Impact of Anime
Over the next few years, the Japanese online video Industry is expected to grow at 7% CAGR(Compound annual growth rate). As reported by MPA, all services including TV and theatrical releases amount to 45% of the aforementioned rate in 2029. From US$31.8 billion in 2024, it is predicted to reach US$34.1 billion in the next five years.
Aside from that, the online video content market will generate its own. With a staggering amount of US$15.3 billion, this is the anticipated revenue generated by 2029. These platforms comprise YouTube as the head, run by User-Generated Content(UGC).
The Subscription Video on Demand(SVOD) comprising Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and the Japan-exclusive U-Next, is also in the lead for the platforms that the anime market targets.
TVer, an Advertising-Based Video on Demand conglomerate exclusively in Japan, runs the Japanese Anime Industry on the AVOD platform.
Video-on-Demand Engagement in Anime
Amongst all aspects of Japanese media, Anime covers 36% of video-on-demand (VOD) engagement within over half the year 2024. In terms of its monetization, MPA reports that the anime generated US$2.5 billion in 2023. This is parallel to 8% of the proverbial film industry in Japan. With streaming becoming the head of state for anime fans, 50% of monetization stems from the aforementioned, with TV contributing 27%.

Japanese production studios like TMS Entertainment and Aniplex capitalized on the SVOD market, with over 200 titles of the best anime shows of 2024 streaming on such platforms. International conglomerates like Disney and Warner Brothers also play a part in the growth of the SVOD market.
Increase in Anime Production
As the industry grows, new studios emerge and make an impact. The increase in the market of Anime Production is growing at an ascending rate. In 2024, several programs have allowed the Japanese video industry to be platformed, reaching a wider audience. Predicted to cross over USD$30 billion in the next five years, the Anime industry is now witnessing a steady rise in Japan and the global market.
