Since its inception in 2008, the Manga Taisho Award has been regarded as one of the most prestigious awards in Japanese Manga Culture. Throughout the last 17 years, there have been different winners, and all of them have been selected by the judges after being scrutinized carefully.

The announcement from the official site of the Manga Taisho Award revealed that Kiko Urino’s Alice, even in Space has been crowned as the winner of the 2025 Manga Taisho Award, leaving the likes of COSMOS, Magus of the Library, Re-Living My Life with a Boyfriend Who Doesn’t Remember Me, etc., behind. It was revealed that photos and videos of the award ceremony will be posted on the official website later.

What is Alice, Even in Space about?

Published under Big Comic Spirits, Alice, even in Space (Alice, Dokomademo in Japanese) revolves around Arisu Asahida, who is beautiful and quite popular in high school. Even after such attributes, she has a problem with language and ends up taking help from Inuboshi, who helps her overcome her problems. Amidst her language problem, she longs to become the first female astronaut commander in Japan.

How is the winner of the Manga Taisho Award determined?

The process to determine the winner of the Maga Taisho Award is one of the most tedious ones. To enter the competition, a manga must have eight or fewer volumes published, otherwise, it will not be considered eligible. In 2025, 238 manga titles were nominated, with the judges selecting five manga for the first round of selection.

Out of the 238 manga titles, the judges selected ten, which were nominated for the second round of selection. In the second round, each judge selected three works, with Alice, even in Space, picking up the most points and ultimately becoming the winner. One interesting aspect of the selection process is that the judges read the manga at their own expense.
