What Is The Plot of Made in Abyss?

Riko lives in Belchero Orphanage in the town of Orth. Orth harbours a giant hole within its boundaries, and it is known as Abyss, which has remnants of long-gone civilizations and artifacts. These facts made it the perfect spot for Cave-Raiders who venture into the Abyss for artifacts, even after knowing the dangers lurking within it. Only a few of the elite Cave-Raiders have gone to the depths of the Abyss and earned the title of White Whistles.

Rikoโ€™s mother happened to be one of them before her death. Wanting to follow in her mother’s footsteps, Riko ventures into the Abyss, and on the first layer, she discovers a half-human/half-robot boy and names him Reg. Reg is helped by Riko and her friends in joining the Belchero Orphanage. Later, it is discovered that Lyza left a message for Riko stating she is waiting for her at the deepest layer of the Abyss. Now, a determined Riko journeys into the Abyss, along with Reg, to find her mother.

In Season 2 (The Golden City of the Scorching Sun), Riko, Reg, and Nanachi descend into the Abyss’ Sixth layer after she came into the possession of a White Whistle from overcoming Idofront’s challenges. The trio heads for the promised Golden City, and even though there are dangerous beasts and treacherous terrains, they head further down the Abyss.
