MAPPA Studio known for its award-winning titles like ‘Jujutsu Kaisen’, ‘Chainsaw Man’,’ Vinland Saga Season 2 ‘ and famously known for ‘Attack on Titan’ is set to revive the landmark Shojo series “The Rose of Versailles” as a new anime movie. The teaser flaunts stunning visuals. The project is part of the 50th anniversary project to celebrate the publication of the original ‘The Rose of Versailles’ manga. The adaptation is set to release in Japan in early 2025.

The Rose of Versailles: Background
The series is an original work written and illustrated by Japanese manga artist Riyoko Ikeda. The manga series was published in Shueisha’s shojo manga from 1972 to 1973. An anime adaptation of the series, produced by TMS Entertainment, was also aired from October 10, 1979, to September 3, 1980.
Story
The story is set in France amid the French Revolution. The story initially focuses on Marie Antoinette, who eventually became Queen of France. The focus then shifts to Oscar François de Jarjayes, a woman raised as a son by her father and later appointed commander of the Royal Guard at Versailles. Her attendant is her friend and eventual lover, André Grandier, a commoner.
Oscar becomes aware of people’s growing poverty and unhappiness and he questions the monarchy. Marie Antoinette’s affair with Axel von Fersen causes scandal and her excessive spending pushes France into debt, causing a public outrage. As the movement gains momentum, Oscar aligns with the French Guards and revolutionaries. The story concludes with the overthrowing of the monarchy and the execution of Marie Antoinette.
