Throughout multiple chapters, One Piece has kept the higher-ups at the God Knights and the Gorosei as immortal beings with terrifying power. With their constant regeneration and reappearance on the battlefield, it was believed that these creatures were nearly impossible to kill. But One Piece chapter 1170 clears everything up.
This latest development is shown through the battle involving Loki, King Harald, Shanks, and Scopper Gaban, where Oda quietly tells us how immortal beings can actually be killed. And this does not involve any special Devil Fruits or any ancient weapons, and with this, the world of One Piece as we know it is about to change for good.
Immortality Is Regeneration, Not Invulnerability
With the current chapters of One Piece, one thing is for sure: Immortality is just massive regeneration. The fact that these characters are able to generate so quickly makes their body look like they are immune to any damage, which is not the case. The key here is that Conqueror’s Haki interferes with that recovery process. While it does not shut the healing off completely, it just delays the process.
This can be proven in Egg Head, when Conqueror’s Haki-infused attacks from Bonney and Luffy caused serious damage to Saturn. While using only one powerful attack may not get the job done, repeated Conqueror’s Haki attacks stack interference, slowing recovery until the body can no longer keep up. This proves that not all God Knights and the Gorosei are invincible. Their regeneration doesn’t care about power, only timing, which will break when pressure never lets up.

Why Conqueror’s Haki Is the Only True Counter
With all the battles till now, one thing is pretty clear: Haki rules over all. A powerful Haki can easily overpower any Devil Fruit, no matter how broken its rules may be. This is proved when Law could not manipulate a top-tier fighter, because his Haki rejected the Devil Fruit’s powers. And this principle also applies to the Immortality trail shown in the series. The unknown forces that work this regeneration process operate on a Devil Fruit-like system. So naturally, the forces of Haki will overpower it.
This is why, in the recent chapter, when Gaban and Shanks launch powerful haki infused attacks on Harald, he briefly regains his consciousness. Strong haki weakens Emu’s grip on the selected vessel, which breaks the link for Immortality, possession, and regeneration. When Conqueror’s Haki presses hard enough, that source destabilizes.
