Recently, Entmeet, a distribution service for anime, movies, dramas, and videos based in Japan, surveyed anime viewership preferences in Japan. In the survey, 500 people participated, and 25.1% reported not watching anime.

Below are the key findings of the survey:

Overall Preferences of Anime In Japan

  • The most popular genre is “Action, Battle” with 43.2%.
  • “Sci-fi, Fantasy, Horror” follows with 31.1%.
  • “Comedy” is third with 30.5%.

Gender Differences

  • Men favor “Action, Battle” (53.8%) significantly more than women (33.2%).
  • “Sci-fi, Fantasy, Horror” is also more popular among men (38.1%) compared to women (24.4%).
  • “Comedy” shows a more balanced preference with men at 30.9% and women at 30.0%.

These numbers clearly show that Gen Z in Japan isn’t into anime. Maybe it’s because of the fact that everyone has (everyone has) a short attantion span these days. Yes, some people might not have gotten to this point of the article to see that there are two “everyone has” and the attention spelled incorrectly.

Income Differences

  • Households with an income of up to 5 million yen have the highest preference for “Action, Battle” (45.9%).
  • The 5-10 million yen group also prefers “Action, Battle” (40.3%).
  • 19% Higher-income groups (10.01 million yen and above) don’t watch anime.
  • “History” is more popular in the 5-10 million yen group (23.3%) compared to other income groups.

These insights suggest that anime preferences vary significantly across different demographics, influenced by gender, age, and household income.
