Many consider Fire Force to be a typical shonen anime, but forget it has an incredibly dark base. The series, created by Atsushi Ohkubo, is centered around a world where humans turn into fiery monsters called Infernals, which can happen anytime. These infernals sometimes wreak havoc in the city, so to counter them, a special unit known as the Fire Force is created. This special force is filled with people with special fire-type abilities, and their job is to find out the reason behind these human combustion and save humanity.
The several special charters in the series are some powerful, some are smart, some are funny, and some are purely psychotic. Captain Leonard Burns of Company 1 and the rogue soldier Joker are two of the numerous personalities navigating this dangerous world who stand out due to their dark past.
The two characters are connected because they both witnessed the Adolla and the truth about the Holy Sol temple. This horrific scene helped shape the opposite roles they would eventually play: Joker as a rogue determined to reveal the truth, and Burns as a devoted officer of the Fire Force company.
Exploring Leonard Burns and Joker From Fire Force
Leonard Burns is first introduced as a tough and powerful captain of Company 1, seemingly devoted to the Holy Sol Temple. Beneath his calm faรงade, however, is a guy who is terribly troubled by the past of the corrupt empire. His devotion to the church is not absolute, as the Nataku arc shows; he knows the dark secret about the Evangelist’s connection with the temple and their covert crimes carried out in the name of religion.
Joker, however, took a difficult route all due to his tragic childhood. He was formerly a skilled assassin in the Shadow Unit of the Holy Sol, but he broke out of the group and now lives on the periphery of civilization. Joker has unconventional objectives, but he is adamant about exposing the truth and overthrowing the corrupt empire.
Burns and Joker Witness the Adolla
When Leonard Burns was young, he was a devout follower of the Holy Sol and many times acted as the liaison between the Holy Sol Temple’s public and its Shadow Unit, so many occasions he used to meet up with Joker, who was then known as Five-Two, in the Nether.
Leonard always liked Five-Two as the latter was not a puppet like the other guys from the Shadow Unit, and Five-Two always questioned Leonard about the ways of the world.
During an outbreak, both Burns and Joker were called to hunt down infernals who got loose in the tunnels of the Amaterasu facility. While looking for the last one, the infernal screams like a bug and establishes an Adolla Link with both of them. The link burned the left and right eyes of Five-Two and Burns, respectively, as they both witnessed the Evangelist and her universe.
Coming back to reality, they kill the infernal and consider everything a hallucination, but Joker takes out a burning stone, which proves the existence of a different realm.
Conclusion
After this event, Five Two’s hunger for truth grows exponentially, and he soon escapes his Shadow Unit to take the moniker of Joker, whose sole aim is to reveal the truth about the Evangelist to the world.
On the other end, Burns remains with the Church in order to find out more information about the Holy Sole and the Empire from the inside.
